USA Swimming Nationals: Rachel Komisarz Adds 30-Somethings to Titlist Club With Women’s 100 Fly Triumph

By John Lohn

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, August 2. FIFTH earlier this year at the World Championships in Melbourne, Rachel Komisarz (Lakeside) proved to be No. 1 in her country in the 100-meter butterfly. Surging during the final lap, Komisarz (30) overtook the field and claimed triumph in her prime event in 58.04. The effort wasn't far off her best of 57.79.

Komisarz has been a well-established force in the event the past few years, but she seems to be at the top of her game at the age of 30. Komisarz trailed Dana Vollmer (Cal Aquatics) at the turn, but commandingly took control as the athletes neared the wall. Vollmer, a finalist in the 200 fly earlier in the week, was the silver medalist in 58.48, just off her best of 58.35.

Christine Magnuson, from Tennessee Aquatics, was the third-place finisher in 58.76 and has been enjoying a strong week. She was followed by Samantha Woodward in 58.93 and Kim Vandenberg was the fifth-place performer in 59.00. Vandenberg is better known for her skill in the 200 fly, where she earned the silver medal at the World Champs.
