Canadian National Championships Close Curtain on Third Night of Swimming

CALGARY, Alberta, July 28. THE third night of long course meter swimming came to a close at the Canadian National Championships held in Calgary, Alberta. While no one could match Thomas Kindler's Canadian-record effort from last night, fast swimming still held throughout the evening.

Katelyn Murdoch surfaced from among a packed bunch at the finish to win the women's 50 back in 30.02. Caitlin Meredith placed second in 30.08, while Hanna Kubas took third in 30.17. The top six finishers all came within .31 seconds of Murdoch with sixth-place going to Kelly Stefanyshyn in 30.33.

Pascal Wollach had a bit easier time in the men's 50 back, but still had a close battle with Matthew Rose en route to a 26.01 to 26.62 triumph. Tommy Sacco rounded out the top three in 26.81.

In the middle distance freestyle events, Stephanie Horner won the women's 400 free in 4:15.26 over Tanya Hunks' second-place 4:16.56, while Ryan Cochrane easily won the men's 400 in 3:57.27. Kier Maitland placed second in 4:00.91.

Mackenzie Downing led a pair of swimmers under a minute in the women's 100 fly with a time of 59.47, while Audrey Lacroix lost her 50-meter lead (28.17 to 29.29) to finish second in 59.78. The win gave Downing a sweep of the three butterfly events at the meet.

"I wasn't expecting to win all three," said Downing. "Especially that I wasn't fully prepared for this meet. I was pretty nervous about tonight's 100. So I just focused in trying to go under a minute which I had never done before while in training."

Joe Bartoch held off newly-minted Canadian record holder Kindler in the sprint fly at the 50 distance. Bartoch touched in 53.96, while Kindler finished second in 54.15. Kindler used his explosive speed off the blocks to lead with a 24.99 split at the halfway mark, but could not withstand Bartoch in the end.

Elizabeth Wycliffe cruised in the women's 200 back with a time of 2:12.94 to hit the wall ahead of Julie Wilkinson's 2:14.73, while Keith Beavers won the men's 200 back in 2:01.17 over Charles Francis (2:02.68).
