Thomas Kindler Sets Canadian Record in 50 Fly at Canadian National Championships

CALGARY, Alberta, July 27. THOMAS Kindler set the Canadian record in the men's 50 butterfly at the Canadian National Championships held in Calgary, Alberta during the second evening of long course meter competition.

Kindler clocked a time of 23.81 to surpass the 23.85 set by Mike Mintenko on July 24, 2005. The swim also tied Kindler for 12th in the world this year along with Andrew Lauterstein and Duje Draganja. Joe Bartoch (24.54) and Darryl Rudolf (24.71) rounded out the top three in the event.

Canadian record holder Ryan Cochrane opened the evening with a winning time of 8:15.45 in the men's 800 free to beat Keir Maitland, who placed second in 8:20.35. Cochrane's time fell well short of his national standard of 7:51.55 set at Worlds this year.

Another national record holder, Erica Morningstar, won the women's 100 free in 54.98, just under a second shy of her record time 54.08 set earlier this year. Meanwhile, Brent Hayden won the men's 100 free in 49.51 over Colin Russell's 50.13. Hayden wound up more than a second off his Canadian record time of 48.43 recorded at Worlds this year.

Annamay Pierse cruised into the women's 100 breast title with a time of 1:09.16, short of her Canadian record time of 1:07.78 registered at the Pan American Games earlier this month, while Mike Brown scored the men's 100 breast crown in 1:02.27 after battling Scott Dickens (1:02.85) in the event.

Tanya Hunks walked away with the women's 400 IM title in 4:49.99, while Andrew Ford had a bit tougher time in a 4:31.76 to 4:33.45 victory over Bruno Langlois in the men's 400 IM race.

Meanwhile, Mackenzie Downing claimed the women's 50 fly event in 27.36 with Vanessa Charron, 15, and Jen Beckberger tying for second in 27.86.

In 800 freestyle relay action, the team of Maya Beaudry, Lauren Lavigna, Hunks and Savannah King won the women's heats with an 8:19.15, while the foursome of Pascal Wollach, Chad Hankewich, Adam Sioui and Raymond Betuzzi picked up the men's title in 7:29.63.
