Near Misses Underscore First Night of Canadian National Championships

CALGARY, Alberta, July 26. SEVERAL national records nearly fell during the first night of long course meter swimming at the Canadian National Championships.

Annamay Pierse, back from breaking the oldest Canadian national record on the books with a time of 2:26.79 in the 200 breaststroke at the Pan American Games as well as notching a 1:07.78 to take the national record in the 100 breast at the event, nearly added the 50 breast to her resume with a time of 32.06. Rhiannon Leier's 31.73 set in 2003 remained safe, though.

Scott Dickens came within half-a-second of taking down Morgan Knabe's men's 50 breast record of 28.22 set in 2003 with a time of 28.77. He had to settle with holding off Mike Brown (28.92) and Paul Kornfeld (28.93) for the title.

Erica Morningstar, already the record holder in the 100 free, almost picked up the 200 free Canadian record of 1:59.38 set by Sophie Simard in 2005 when she won the national title in 1:59.71, while Julia Wilkinson came up short of the national standard in the 100 back with a time of 1:02.04. Erin Gammel's record of 1:01.93 set in 2005, however, held up to the pressure.

Other individual winners included Savannah King, 15, in the women's 1500 free (17:07.38), Brian Johns in the men's 200 free (1:49.69), Matt Hawes in the men's 100 back (56.18), Macken Downing in the women's 200 fly (2:10.84) and Stefan Hirniak in the men's 200 fly (2:00.06).
