Germany, Italy Pace First Day of European Youth Olympic Festival Swimming

BELGRADE, Serbia, July 23. GERMANY and Italy earned top billing with multiple gold medals during the first night of swimming at the European Youth Olympic Festival taking place in Belgrade, Serbia this week.

Women's 400 freestyle 16&U
Germany's Melanie Radicke touched out Great Britain's Aimee Willmott and Ireland's Grainne Murphy in the women's middle distance event. Radicke won the gold medal in 4:21.11, while Willmott placed second in 4:21.40 and Murphy took third in 4:21.89.

Men's 100 freestyle 16&U
Russia's Danila Izotov won a close battle over Italy's Francesco Donin and France's Nosy Pelagie in the men's two-lap freestyle. Izotov snagged the title in 51.23, while Donin (51.49) and Pelagie (51.88) rounded out the top three.

Women's 100 butterfly 14&U
Italy's Silvia Di Pietro hit the wall with a slim margin of victory in .09 seconds over Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom for the 100 fly title. Di Pietro clocked a 1:00.60 readout, while Sjostrom touched in 1:00.69 for second place. Great Britain's Sophie Ward placed a distant third in 1:02.56. Swimming out of the B final, Slovakia's Katarina Listopadova would have took third in the championship heat with a time of 1:01.85.

Men's 200 backstroke 16&U
Poland's Radoslaw Kawecki dropped two seconds from his prelim time to win in 2:05.36, while Hungary's Balazs Zambo picked up second in 2:06.32. Sweden's Linus Junefelt closed out the top three in 2:07.13, just beating Slovenia's Jan Karel Petric (2:07.45) and Great Britain's Adam John (2:07.62). Once again, the B final winner would have finished third in the championship heat as Italy's Marco Fanti Rovetta clocked a 2:06.68.

Women's 200 breaststroke 14&U
Italy's Pamela Gabrieli easily won the 200 breaststroke title with a time of 2:34.58. Finland's Noora Laukkanen finished second in 2:36.31, while Eszter Temesszentandrasi of Hungary nabbed third in 2:37.73.

Men's 200 IM 16&U
Great Britain's Roberto Pavoni had just enough in the tank to hold off Hungary's Dominik Kozma. Even though Kozma whacked more than three seconds from his prelim time to hit the wall in 2:07.03, Pavoni got his had to the wall first in 2:06.96. Poland's Marcin Cieslak rounded out the top three in 2:08.30.

Relays
Germany's team of Melanie Radicke, Juliane Reinhold, Silke Lippok and Paulina Schmiedel won the women's 14&U 400 freestyle relay in 3:54.64, while Italy's foursome of Francesco Donin, Andrea Toniato, Dario Palladino and Fabio Gimondi claimed the men's 16&U 400 freestyle relay in 3:28.48.
