Third Night of Prelim Swimming Concludes at Pan American Games

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, July 18. THE third night of preliminary swimming concluded at the Pan American Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as competitors swam in the men's 200 free, 200 IM and women's 200 free and 400 freestyle relay.

Women's 200 freestyle
Ava Ohlgren of the United States paced the women's 200 free prelims with a time of 2:02.24 out of the second heat, after clearing Canada's Hilary Bell, who clocked a time of 2:02.57 in the first heat. Bell's teammate Stephanie Horner placed third in 2:02.62, while Venezuela's Erin Volcan took fourth in 2:03.92.

The United States' Katie Carroll placed fifth in 2:04.12, while Brazil's Monique Ferreira (2:04.27) and Venezuela's Jennifer Marquez (2:04.28) finished sixth and seventh.

El Salvador's Pamela Benitez closed out the top eight in 2:04.42.

Men's 200 freestyle
Brazil's Rodrigo Castro nearly cleared the 1:50 mark with a time of 1:50.01 for the quickest time out of the prelim session.

Meanwhile, Canada's Chad Hankewich took second in 1:51.12, while Uruguay's Martin Kutscher Belgeri finished third in 1:51.29.

Canada's Adam Sioui (1:52.04), the United States' Matthew Owen (1:52.46) and Robert Margalis (1:52.71) wound up fourth through sixth, while Venezuela's Crox Acuna (1:52.97) and the Cayman Islands' Shaune Fraser picked up seventh and eighth.

Men's 200 IM
The United States' Geoff Rathgeber touched first with a time of 2:01.61 out of the second heat, while Canada's Keith Beavers joined him in the heat for second in 2:02.35.

The Barbados' Bradley Ally had the fastest time from the first heat with a third-place 2:04.09, while Brazil's Thiago Pereira placed fourth in 2:04.23 from heat three.

The Bahamas' Jeremy Knowles (2:04.35), Trinidad and Tobago's Nicholas Bovell (2:04.38), Canada's Tobias Oriwol (2:04.39) and the United States' Robert Margalis (2:04.56) rounded out the top eight.

Women's 400 freestyle relay
The United States foursome of Lauren Thies, Emily Kukors, Maritza Correia and Michele King topped prelims with a time of 3:45.76, while Canada's team of Hilary Bell, Chanelle Charron-Watson, Elizabeth Collins and Seanna Mitchell placed second in 3:47.18.

Brazil's team of Tatiana Barbosa, Flavia Delaroli, Monique Ferreira and Manuella Lyrio completed the top three from the evening with a time of 3:54.25.
