South Africa Continues to Dominate All Africa Games; Kirsty Coventry Sets African Record

ALGIERS, Algeria, July 16. AFTER a day off for the swimmers to rest and the organizers to try to get themselves back on track after issues like playing South Africa's wrong anthem, the team from South Africa dominated again during the All Africa Games held in Algiers.

While Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe had the best effort of the day with an African record of 28.89 in the women's 50 back to give her four gold medals, South Africa came out ahead in nearly all of the rest of the events.

World champion Gerhard Zandberg won the men's 50 back in a Games-record 25.68, while also helping his 400 freestyle relay of Gideon Louw, Shaun Harris and Jean Basson to a time of 3:22.52 to also set an All Africa Games standard.

Other South Africans capturing gold included Troyden Prinsloo in the 800 free (8:12.26), Amanda Loots in the 100 fly with an All Africa Games record of 1:00.09, and Suzaan Van Biljon in the 100 breast with a time as of yet still unreported.

Meanwhile, Algerian Daid Sofiane gave the partisan crowd something to cheer for with a win in the 200 breast (2:14.27). The win came when he touched out South Africa's William Dering.
