Meet Record Book Torched at Middle Atlantic Senior Champs

LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania, July 14. IN the final day of long course meter swimming on the campus of Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Penn., the meet record book felt some flames as swimmers at the Middle Atlantic Senior Championships shined.

Joe Kinderwater of WSY Swimming joined Andrew Gemmell of the Delaware Swim Team in surpassing Bob Gavin's meet record of 15:51.61 in the men's 1500 free. Kinderwater, however, came out on top with a time of 15:46.89 against Gemmell's 15:50.03.

Another twosome eclipsed a meet record in the following event, the women's 100 fly. Cat Whetstone of Rutgers Swimming demolished the meet record she set during prelims of 1:02.41 with a time of 1:00.53. She had to hold off Kati Nolan, 15, of Hershey Aquatics, as the other Kat went 1:01.43 for second. The previous standard of 1:02.62 had stood since Kelly Nelson of Big Cat Aquatics – do you hear a meow somewhere? – set it on July 15, 2006.

In the next event, Doug Lennox touched in 56.37 to notch the men's 100 fly meet record. Christopher Brady of Team Delaware previously held the standard with a 56.81 set n July 15, 2006.

Patrick Shirck of Big Cat Aquatics lowered his own meet record of 56.01 set during prelims in the 100 back with a time of 55.35 to win the crown over teammate Dan Fimbianti's 59.13. By the end of the day, Shirck had whacked more than two seconds off the 57.62 set by Ian Clark on July 15, 2006.

The meet records kept falling as Big Cat Aquatics' quartet of Michelle Myers, Caitlin Meehan, Kelly Nelson and Molly Crispell broke the 400 medley relay record with a time of 4:18.84. Germantown Academy had previously set the standard at 4:21.13 on July 15, 2006.

Other winners from the day included GCIT Swimming's Joanna Thomas, who touched in 17:13.16 in the 1500 free, while Kristen Shickora, 17, of Atlantis Aquatics won the 100 back in 1:03.05.

Leah Gingrich, 17, of WSY Swimming put the cherry on top of a strong weekend with a 2:18.66 to win the 200 IM, while Gemmell took home the men's medley title in 2:10.31 in an incredibly close finish. Doug Lennox (2:10.58), Tim Hayes (2:10.68) and Sean Biedermann (2:10.75) all finished under 2:11 as they chased Gemmell.
