United States Dominates Pan American Open Water 10K

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, July 14. THE United States put on a show during the 10K open water swim at the Pan American Games held at the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Emerging open water superstar Chloe Sutton, 15, of the United States held off Brazilian challenger Poliana Okimoto in a down-to-the-wire battle in the women's race. Sutton, the two-time U.S. National 10K champion captured the gold with a time of 2:13:47.6, just ahead of Okimoto's 2:13:48.4.

"After World Championships this year I thought I wouldn't compete in open water again," Sutton said after her success following a Worlds performance that was less than her own expectations. "But I did well at other meets and I gained more experience which brought my confidence back. It's the best thing that could have happened."

Meanwhile, Canada's Tanya Hunks finished right behind for bronze in 2:13:50.5. Sutton's teammate, Kalyn Keller, took home fourth in 2:14:20.9.

In the men's race, the U.S. dominated with a 1-2 finish. Fran Crippen snared a close win over compatriot Chip Peterson. Crippen, who placed second behind Peterson in the 10K at the U.S. National Championships this year, turned the tables with a readout of 2:02:24.1.

"It's a great start to the Games," Crippen said. "It was a great crowd and all in all a great venue. The water was choppy but we expected that. We came and trained here so we had an idea of what it would be like."

Peterson, who is the three-time defending U.S. National champ in the 10K, settled for silver in 2:02:29.2. Brazil's Allan Carmo, meanwhile, rounded out the podium with a bronze-medal winning 2:03:53.7.
