Cullen Jones Wins 50 Free to Headline Auburn Sectional’s First Night

AUBURN, Alabama, July 12. CULLEN Jones touched first in his pet event, the 50 free, during the first night of long course meter competition at the Auburn Sectional.

Jones stopped the clock in 22.43 in the splash-and-dash to hold off Bryan Lundquist, who took second in 22.93.

In other action, Micah Martindale claimed a two-second triumph in the women's 800 free with a time of 8:41.61 as Rachel Komisarz finished second in 8:43.31. Komisarz would go on to edge Kara Denby, 26.07 to 26.10, for the women's 50 free title with Christine Magnuson not too far behind in 26.21.

In another tight race, Mary DeScenza emerged triumphant from the 200 IM in 2:18.14 as Emile Ewing came up short in tracking her down with a second-place 2:18.82.

The battles did not end there as Margaret Hoelzer touched out Abbie Fish, 2:11.13 to 2:11.67, for the 200 fly crown.

In less competitive races, Robert Looney cruised home for the men's 800 free title with a time of 8:17.49, while Andrew Mitchell won the 200 IM by nearly a second in 2:06.12. Gil Stovall also went sub-2:00 in the 200 fly with a time of 1:59.54.
