Gingrich Puts on Show at Mid-Atlantic Champs

LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania, July 13. A World Championships qualifier in the open-water discipline, Leah Gingrich is undoubtedly one of the United States' rising phenoms. A member of the West Shore YMCA, where she's coached by Mike Gobrecht, Gingrich provided further proof of her prowess during the second day of the Mid-Atlantic Long Course Championships.

One day after winning the 800 free, Gingrich captured top honors at Bucknell University in the 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle. In the 200 fly, Gingrich posted a time of 2:14.31, which bettered the meet record of Kelly Nelson (2:15.54), set last year. This summer, Nelson (Suburban Swim Center) settled for second place in 2:15.20. As for the 400 free, Gingrich delivered another meet record, as her clocking of 4:16.80 was quicker than the 4:17.22 of Kailey Morris in 2005. Germantown Academy's Alicia Aemisegger, a Princeton University sophomore, was second in 4:20.53.

Germantown's Katie Riefenstahl, one of the top prospects in the country heading into her senior year of high school, continued to have a stellar meet. After winning the 200 backstroke and 50 freestyle on Wednesday night, Riefenstahl won the 100 free on Thursday in 57.17, better than her meet record of 57.45 from last year.

On the men's side, Andrew Gemmell (Delaware Swim Team) won the 200 butterfly in 2:04.33 and Germantown Academy's Pat Gallagher prevailed in the 100 freestyle with a swim of 53.14. In the 400 freestyle, West Shore's Josef Kinderwater sliced one hundredth of a second off his meet record by covering the distance in 4:03.15.
