Age Group Swimmers Featured in First Black Sea Games

TRABZON, Turkey, July 10. YOUNG swimmers hailing from countries located near the Black Sea took part in the inaugural running of the Black Sea Games held in Trabzon, Turkey over the weekend. The competition took place July 4-7 within four different age groups.

Boys 17&Over
Russia dominated the boys 17&over age group by winning 12 out of the possible 16 event titles in the division. Pavel Polpavtsev led all-comers with a breaststroke sweep when he won the 50 (29.20), 100 (1:04.02) and 200 (2:20.96) breaststroke events.

Four other swimmers doubled up with a trio from Russia and one swimmer from Ukraine double-dipping at the meet. Oleksandr Isakov grabbed the 50 (23.75) and 100 (51.43) freestyles for Ukraine, while Vitaly Borisov (50 back (27.06), 200 back (2:03.47)), Alexander Shimin (400 free (4:00.83), 1500 free (15:59.94)) and Artem Voronov (50 fly (25.18), 100 fly (55.81)) each pocketed a pair of titles for Russia.

Other individual winners included Russia's Anton Anchin (100 back (57.66)), Roman Mikhaylov (200 fly (2:04.71)) and Anton Nazarov (200 free (1:52.77)) as well as Ukraine's Denys Dubrov (200 IM (2:04.90)) and Vadym Fastenko (400 IM (4:36.72))

Girls 15-16
Ukraine's Kateryna Dikidzhi shined in the girls 15-16 age group division. She finished the four-day meet with a title a day. She swept the shorter distance freestyle events with wins in the 50 (26.77), 100 (57.63) and 200 (2:07.19), then added a 100 back (1:04.80) win for good measure.

A quartet of swimmers also chimed in with multiple crowns. Greece's Kalliopi Araouzou earned the longer distance freestyle titles when she won the 400 (4:21.43) and 800 (8:56.06), while Ukraine's Yuliya Nagorska took the 200 fly (2:15.49) and 400 IM (4:57.10) races. Russia also supplied a pair of double-winners in Ekaterina Burdina (50 breast (33.54), 100 breast (1:12.72)) and Anastasia Lyazeva (50 fly (28.65), 100 fly (1:03.24)).

Ukraine's Kseniya Brusko (200 breast (2:33.96)), Russia's Nataliya Martynova (200 back (2:18.65)), Aleksandra Musienko (200 IM (2:21.13)) and Violetta Romanovskaya (50 back (30.88)) also garnered top-billing.

Boys 15-16
Russia's tag team of Aleksey Kulikov and Dmitriy Pokotylo notched meet triples with three wins apiece in the boys 15-16 division. Kulikov swept the breaststroke events by touching first in the 50 (31.32), 100 (1:06.09) and 200 (2:22.88), while Pokotylo won the 50 (27.35) and 100 back (58.62) as well as the 50 fly (25.68).

Turkey's Emre Altinok (100 fly (57.71), 200 fly (2:09.35)), Russia's Evgeny Bolotov (400 free (4:02.06), 1500 free (16:01.92)), Greece's Christos Katrantzis (200 IM (2:12.96), 400 IM (4:47.79)) and Russia's Dmitry Parulkov (200 free (1:54.15), 200 back (2:09.34)) each snared two titles, while Russia's Ivan Ivanchikov (100 free (53.31)) and Greece's Fotios Koliopoulos (50 free (23.97)) won a single event.

Girls 13-14
Greece's Themida Iakovidou, Russia's Elena Novichova and Ukraine's Anna Yevchak owned the girls 13-14 races. Iakovidou won the 50 (27.49), 100 (59.27) and 200 (2:09.11) events, while Novichova took home the 100 (1:15.65) and 200 breast (2:40.85) as well as the 50 fly (29.64). Yevchak demonstrated versatility with wins in the 400 free (4:28.88), 800 free (9:12.78) and 100 fly (1:03.70).

Ukraine's Mariya Tereshchenko provided the only other multiple winner with backstroke wins in the 100 (1:04.83) and 200 (2:20.03).

Turkey's Gizem Bozkurt (400 IM (5:06.60)), Romania's Alexandra Dobrin (200 IM (2:26.91)), Greece's Maria-Georgia Michalaka (50 breast (34.34)), Ukraine's Daryna Zevina (50 back (30.64)) and Russia's Kristina Zolotareva (200 fly (2:24.11)) rounded out the title-winners in the girls 13-14 division.
