Strong Field Set for Meet of Champions

MISSION VIEJO, California, June 13. A high-quality field will gather Thursday through Sunday for the Mission Viejo Meet of Champions. The competition is another summer tuneup that will serve as a gauge for where athletes stand in their training. Many of the attendees will compete later this summer at the United States Nationals in Indianapolis.

Among the headliners in the field are American distance aces Kate Ziegler and Larsen Jensen. Earlier this year in Melbourne, Ziegler defended her world championships in the 800 and 1500 freestyles. As for Jensen, he's the reigning Oympic silver medalist in the metric mile and is the American-record holder in the 800 and 1500 freestyles.

The German National Team will bring an international flavor to the meet, with its contingent featuring the likes of Britta Steffen and Antje Buschschulte. Steffen is the world-record holder in the 100 freestyle, though her time ranks second in history, behind the unratified mark of 52.99, turned in by Aussie Libby Lenton at the Duel in the Pool.

Other big names slated to race include South Africa's Roland Schoeman and the American triumvirate of Whitney Myers, Lacey Nymeyer and Rachel Komisarz. Schoeman is one of the top sprinters in the world while Myers was the champion in the 200 individual medley at last year's Pan Pacific Championships. As for Nymeyer, she was a member of the United States' world-record setting 800 freestyle relay at the World Champs.
