Olympian Natalie Coughlin Wins Female Achievement Award from Pop Warner

ANAHEIM, California, May 30. POP Warner Little Scholars, Inc., the largest national youth football and cheerleading organization in the United States, awarded USA Swimming two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Natalie Coughlin with the Pop Warner Female Achievement Award on Saturday night at the 47th Annual Pop Warner Scholar All-American Banquet in Anaheim, Calif.

"Natalie Coughlin is one of the world's most accomplished Olympians. Her ability to overcome career threatening injuries and go on to achieve such success as a swimmer is both heroic and inspirational to all Pop Warner participants," said Mary FitzGerald, Chief Operating Officer, Pop Warner Little Scholars. "Our youth today would benefit from more role models like Natalie."

Coughlin is the first swimmer to be recognized by Pop Warner and joins many other prominent and successful females who have accepted this award at the Pop Warner Scholar All-American Banquet including Olympic Gold Medal Gymnasts, Kerri Strug (1999) and Amanda Borden (2003), American Idol Judge Paula Abdul, Sports Journalists Robin Roberts (ABC/ESPN), Lesley Visser (CBS) and Kelly Naqi (ESPN) to name a few.

The Pop Warner Female Achievement Award was presented to Coughlin not only because of her athletic achievements, but also for her role in the community, as a spokesperson for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, and her ability to persevere through life's biggest challenges.

"Pop Warner is such a unique organization, it's important to motivate kids while teaching them about discipline and the importance of balancing sports with academics," Coughlin said. "I am truly honored to be recognized for my individual achievements alongside such a talented group of people within the athletic community."
