Potec Leads the Way in Barcelona

BARCELONA, May 24. Romania's Camelia Potec, last year's European champion in the 200 meter freestyle, won her favorite event at the XXI Trofeo International Swim Meet in Barcelona today, the second stop on the Mare Nostrum tour. The smooth-stroking 18-year-old touched in 1:59.06, the world's second fastest time in 2000. Russia's Nadezhda Chemezova, the 1998 Goodwill Games standout, was a distant second at 2:01.38.

Denmark's Mette Jacobsen swam a strong 59.72 to win the 100 meter fly, out-duelling her teammate Sophia Skou at 1:00.57.

Seventeen year-old Yana Klochkova, who won the 800 free yesterday, took the 400 I.M. in 4:43.34, pushed by the Czech Republic's Hana Cerna (4:44.99).

Russian-turned-Spaniard Nina Zhivanevskaya easily downed Antje Buschschulte to take the 200 back in 2:12.30 to the German's 2:13.80.

Hungary's Agnes Kovacs, 18, had no trouble disposing of Belgium's Brigitte Becue in the 100 breast, winning by almost two full seconds in 1:08.42

Great Britain's Sue Rolph sprinted 25.48 for the 50 free, well ahead of German star, Sandra Volker.

In the men's competition, Romanian Cezar Badita was the baddest swimmer in the 400 IM, touching in 4:20.65 to upset Israel's Mickey Halika (4:23.11) and South Africa's Terrence Parkin (4:24.78).

Russia's Roman Sloudnov avenged his upset loss to Ukraine's Oleg Lisogor in the 50 breast by turning the tables on Lisogor in the 100, 1:02.77 to 1:03.35.

Ukraine's Denis Sylantiev flew to an easy win in the 100 fly in 53.60, Russia's Andrei Kapralov took the 200 free (1:49.96), and Brazil's Rogerio Romero grabbed the 200 back (2:01.02). South Africa's Nick Folker out-sprinted Algeria's Salim Iles, 22.80 to 23.00.
