David Davies Takes 1500 Title at Speedo Grand Challenge

IRVINE, California, May 27. GREAT Britain's David Davies, a leading contender for gold in the 1500 freestyle at the Beijing Olympics, won his pet event Sunday night at the Speedo Grand Challenge. Davies, who took bronze in the metric mile at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, covered the discipline in 15:17.03, good for a meet record by nine-plus seconds.

In the women's 200 breaststroke, Keri Hehn prevailed in 2:27.66, touching the wall ahead of Trojan teammate Rebecca Soni and Tara Kirk. Soni went 2:28.05 while Kirk was timed in 2:29.45. Three-time Olympian Amanda Beard qualified for the evening final, but opted to scratch from the championship session.

A tight battle emerged in the 100 backstroke, with Stanford's Brooke Bishop besting the field with a mark of 1:03.34. Bishop narrowly edged Great Britain's Melanie Marshall (1:03.57), Cal's Dana Vollmer (1:03.65) and Stanford's Julia Smit (1:03.85). As for the women's 200 butterfly, Stanford's Elaine Breeden complemented her win in the 100 fly by checking in with a triumphant time of 2:12.13.

Cal's Emily Silver was the swiftest performer in the 100 freestyle, covering her two laps in 55.69, ahead of the 56.26 of Bishop and the 56.54 of Erin Reilly. Smit was fourth in 56.83. Meanwhile, the men's title in the 100 free went to sprint staple Jason Lezak, who touched in 50.19. He was followed by Gabe Woodward in 50.43 and Britain's Ross Davenport in 50.54.

Other winners included Alyssa Anderson in the women's 800 freestyle (8:44.32), Great Britain's Euan Dale in the men's 200 breaststroke (2:15.84), Britain's Matt Clay in the men's 100 backstroke (56.66) and Eddie Erazo in the 200 butterfly (1:59.24) with a meet record.
