Dara, Jenny Shine in Arizona Sun

TEMPE, AZ. Shrugging off 107-degree temperatures. and in the midst of hard training, former teammates Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson sparkled in the desert heat, exchanging victories in four events.

Torres registered wins in the 50 meter freestyle (25.42), beating Keiko Price (26.04) and Thompson (26.05), and came from behind to overtake Thompson in the 200m free, 2:03.12 to 2:03.20.

Thompson roared back with wins in the 100 fly, clocking 59.97 to Torres' 1:01.35, and in the 100 free, edging her older rival, 55.44 to 55.70.

Shelly Ripple out-touched Torres in the 100 back 1:04.84 to 1:04.94 in Torres' dorsal debut. The heat included Catherine Fox, Misty Hyman, Jenny Thompson, Olympic champion Beth Botsford and Denali Knapp.

Hyman won the 200 fly (2:15.00) while 14-year-old Kalyn Keller took the 400 free (4:20.83).

Amanda Beard took both breaststrokes in 1:14.11 and 2:35.74.

South Africa's Ryk Neethling took three events in the men's competition: 400 free (3:59.28), 800 free (8:14.88–splitting 4:11 – 4:03), and 1500 free (15:44.96).

Kyle Salyards swept both breaststroke races, clocking 1:06.27 for the 100 and 2:21.27 for the 200. Germany's Michael Kiedel won the 200 free in 1:52.26, handily defeating Neethling, and the 200 IM in 2:10.49.
