Evening Prelims Start Down Under at Telstra Grand Prix

BRISBANE, Australia, May 18. WITH the Eric Namesnik Grand Prix opening morning finals in the States, the Aussies did the same with the Telstra Grand Prix held in Brisbane, Australia from May 18-20.

Men's 100 freestyle
Southport Olympic ruled the event with three of the top eight spots, including the top two in qualifying. Andrew Lauterstein paced the field with a 50.56, while teammate Ashley Callus clocked a second-place 50.66. Andrew Mewing of Yeronga Park completed the top three with a time of 51.07.

Other top eight finishers included Reece Turner of Port Macquarie (51.14), Kenrick Monk of Sopac Swim Club (51.19), Nick Ffrost of Southport Olympic (51.23), Cameron Prosser of MLC Aquatic (51.27) and Patrick Murphy of Melbourne Vicentre (51.35).

One of the shockers, however, belonged to world championship 100 free bronze medalist Eamon Sullivan, who was disqualified in prelims.

Women's 200 freestyle
Albany Creek placed three swimmers into the top eight as Lorna Tonks (2:02.33), Bronte Barratt (2:03.26) and Kylie Palmer (2:04.00) finished second, fourth and sixth, respectively, in preliminary competition.

Meanwhile, Lara Davenport of Kingscliff topped the field with a time of 2:01.76 and Angie Bainbridge of Hunter took third in 2:02.73.

Melissa Gorman of Redcliffe Leagues split Barratt and Palmer with a fifth-place time of 2:03.60, while Frances Adcock of Norwood placed seventh in 2:04.05. Jade Neilson rounded out the top eight in 2:04.11.

Women's 100 breaststroke
Lethal Leisel Jones of Commercial kept some fuel in the tank as she eased into the third qualifying spot with a time of 1:12.10. Sally Foster of Central Aquatic posted the top qualifying time of 1:10.48, while Sarah Katsoulis of Carey Aquatic finished second in 1:11.97.

Shayne Reese of Carey Aquatic (1:12.12), Jade Edmistone of Commercial (1:13.23), Sara Marson of Twin Towns (1:13.31), Jennifer Reilly of Rockingham (1:13.51) and Rebecca Blevins of West Coast (1:13.87) will make up the rest of the top eight in the event.

Men's 400 IM
Only six men competed in the men's 400 IM as Travis Nederpelt of Perth clocked a 4:33.90 to lead the pack. Mitchelle Bacon of Norwood finished second in 4:38.83, while Leith Brodie of Albany Creek took third in 4:39.32.

Chris Walker-Hebborn of Great Britain finished fourth in 4:40.73, while Shane Cross of Warringah Aquatic (4:41.45) and Declan Potts of Norwood (4:48.53) finished out qualifying.

Women's 100 butterfly
Felicity Galvez of Chandler clocked the top time of 1:00.17, while Samantha Hamill of Quad Park took second in 1:01.76. Meanwhile, Lara Davenport of Kingscliff placed third in 1:01.87, while Jessicah Schipper of Redcliffe Leagues grabbed fourth in 1:02.10.

The rest of the top eight will be comprised of Jo-Lene Dendle of Redcliffe Leagues (1:02.11), Libby Lenton of Commercial (1:04.10), Rebecca Ohlwein of Chandler (1:04.52) and Olivia Halicek of Liverpool (1:05.33).

Men's 100 backstroke
Kingscliff claimed two of the top three spots as Ethan Rolff touched first in 56.55 and Hayden Stoeckel finished third in 57.44. Gregg Fyffe of Super Centre Aquatic split the difference for second in 57.11.

Ashley Delaney of Nunawading took fourth in 57.64, while Ephraim Hannant of Miami placed fifth in 57.91.

Marco Loughran of Great Britain (58.08), Daniel Arnamnart of Aquaburn (58.20) and Benjamin Donaldson of Albany Creek (58.58) placed sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, to complete the top eight.

Men's 200 butterfly
Moss Burmester of New Zealand easily paced the pack with a time of 2:02.49, while Chris Wright of Commercial finished second in 2:04.16. Meanwhile, Adam Kable of Bankstown Sports (2:05.39) and Nick D'Arcy of Maroochydore (2:06.12) earned the next two qualifying spots.

The bottom half of the top eight included Nick Cordner of Ivanhoe Neons (2:06.75), Adam Mallett of Great Britain (2:08.08), Jack Nunn of Redcliffe Leagues (2:10.40) and Jamie Broom of Great Britain (2:10.69).

Women's 200 IM
In the women's 200 IM, Albany Creek's Lorna Tonks grabbed the top seed in 2:16.99, while Kristy Morrison of SLC Aquadot (2:18.64) and Jennifer Reilly of Rockingham (2:19.50) took second and third, respectively.

Ashleigh McCleery of Miami and Lara Carroll of Fremantle Port tied for fourth with matching 2:19.95s, while Ellen Fullerton of Miami placed sixth in 2:21.05.

Rebecca Blevins of West Coast (2:22.86) and Stephanie Rice of St. Peters Western (2:23.05) rounded out the top eight.

Men's 400 freestyle
In the men's middle distance competition, Canada's Ryan Cochrane stopped the clock in 3:54.78 for the top seed, while Cameron Smith of St. Peters Western (4:00.50) and Robert Hurley of Wests Illawarra Aquatic (4:00.96) earned the second and third seeds, respectively.

Trent Grimsley of Albany Creek (4:01.01), Patrick Murphy of Melbourne Vicentre (4:03.93) and Ephraim Hannant of Miami (4:04.49) took fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

Meanwhile, Nick Ffrost of Southport Olympic (4:05.40) and Liam Auer of Miami (4:05.52) completed the top eight.

Men's 200 breaststroke
Commercial snared two of the top three spots as Christian Sprenger touched first in 2:16.02 and Luke Trickett finished third in 2:23.83. Craig Calder of Albury wound up second in 2:21.48, while Robert McDonald of St. Peters Western placed fourth in 2:23.86.

Other top eight finishers included James Stacey of Barker Aquatics (2:24.53), Brenton Rickard of Brothers (2:26.50), Mitchell Bacon of Norwood (2:30.21) and Douglas Hepburn of Warringah Aquatic (2:31.36).

Women's 200 backstroke
Sophie Edington of Kingscliff claimed the top spot in the 200 back with a time of 2:13.50, while Frances Adcock of Norwood took second in 2:15.62.

Overall, only seven swimmers competed in the event as Joanna Fargus of Commercial finished third in 2:18.07, Tay Zimmer of Kingscliff placed fourth in 2:19.79, Belinda Hocking of Albury took fifth in 2:20.93 and Charlotte Clarke of Norwood (2:26.44) and Fiona Connell of Port Macquarie (2:26.74) concluded the preliminary session.

Monaco Style 50 Knockouts
In the Monaco knockouts preliminary qualifying rounds, Andrew Lauterstein of Southport Olympic topped the 50 fly in 24.55, while Daniel Arnamnart of Aquaburn clocked a 26.04 in the 50 back. Meanwhile, Christian Sprenger of Commercial touched in 28.14 to lead 50 breast qualifying, while Cameron Prosser of MLC Aquatic posted a 23.42 for the top time in the 50 free.

In the women's events, Danni Miatke of Carey Aquatic stopped the clock in 27.36 in the 50 fly, while Sophie Edington of Kingscliff touched in 29.39 for the top 50 back time. Leisel Jones of Commercial registered a 32.43 in the 50 breast, while Cate Campbell of Indooroopilly hit the wall in 25.42 in the 50 free.
