Pair of Masters Relay Records Set by Team TYR

LOS ANGELES, California, May 16. RACING at the UCLA Bruin Masters Short Course Meet earlier this month, the quartet of Scott Hubbard, Christopher Beach, Erik Hochstein and Dan Wegner set a pair of national relay records. The Masters marks arrived in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays in the 35-and-over category, and were faster than any age-group Masters effort in history.

In the 400 free relay, the foursome turned in a time of 3:07.75 to set a record by eight seconds, with the swimmers hitting for 46-point averages for their 100 freestyle legs. Later in the meet, the TYR-sponsored unit clocked in at 6:56.89 in the 800 free relay, which lopped 13 seconds off the previous record. The men, who train under Clay Evans and Bonnie Adair with Southern California Aquatics, will compete this weekend at Masters Nationals.

Each of the men had some obstacle to overcome. While Hochstein was making a comeback from shoulder injuries and surgery, Hubbard was swimming one week after becoming a father and hadn't been well-rested for the meet. Beach is in the early stages of his Masters career and has not competed seriously since he was a collegiate athlete at Columbia University. As for Wegner, he's been juggling a hectic business schedule.
