Promising Seniors-To-Be 2007: Eric Friedland

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 17. IN the next stop of our Promising Seniors-To-Be series on SwimmingWorldMagazine.com, we feature Eric Friedland. Friedland swims for Jamie Grimes of Walter Johnson High in Bethesda, Md., and Scott Vekeman of the Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club located Rockville, Md.

As of the May 11 National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) release of All-American candidates, Friedland stood as the fourth-fastest swimmer in the 100 breast (56.40). He also notched a 1:51.94 in the 200 IM to be added to the consideration list.

Here is our interview with Friedland:

Was there a watershed mark in your career that made it clear you had a gift for the sport and could achieve big things?
No. There was never any clear point where I realized I was good at the sport. My parents both were swimmers, and they got me in to the sport. I have always loved it.

What type of interaction do you have with your coach when it comes to training? What kind of input do you have?
My coach is very understanding right now. He will listen to me, and take in my ideas. But, he is right most of the time.

What are your goals for your senior season?
I am trying to make the National Junior team and do really well at Metros, which is our state meet.

Who has made the biggest impact on your swimming career to this point?
There was no person that really made the greatest impact. Generally, it was my great experience with my summer league team. We just have one great big happy family there, which makes it a lot of fun.

Have you verbally committed to any University? If so, which one and why? If not, who is in your top five and why?
No, I have not. My top choices are Auburn, Northwestern, Arizona, California, Southern California and Florida, though.

What has the recruiting process been like for you?
It has been nice. It's cool to have coaches e-mailing me and recruiting me.
