Mai Nakamura Announces Retirement

TOKYO, Japan, April 27. JAPANESE backstroker Mai Nakamura has announced her retirement from the sport due to shoulder injuries. Nakamura is a former world-record holder in the 50-meter backstroke and also held the short-course global standard in the 100 back. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, she claimed a silver medal in the 100 backstroke and a bronze medal as a member of Japan's 400 medley relay.

"I feel relieved, although I can't think of my life without swimming," Nakamura said. "I want to hand down the wonderful feelings you get from the sport."
