Gerhard Zandberg Soars to 50 Backstroke Crown at South African Championships

DURBAN, South Africa, April 13. CONSIDERING that he entered the meet as the reigning world champion, it shouldn't be a surprise that Gerhard Zandberg won the gold medal in the 50-meter backstroke during the fourth day of the South African National Championships. Zandberg, minted as the world champ in Melbourne two weeks ago, was clocked in 25.86.

Zandberg also claimed fourth place in the 100 butterfly, with a time of 54.29, and qualified No. 1 for the 100 freestyle final with a mark of 50.46. The 100 fly was won by Warren Grobbelaar in 54.29. In other male action, William Diering was the victor in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.95), not far off the national record of Terence Parkin (2:12.50).

In the women's 100 butterfly, Mandy Loots was the swiftest performer, behind an effort of 59.80. Meanwhile, breaststroker Suzaan van Biljon won the 200 distance of her prime stroke in 2:29.91 while Australia's Sophie Edington, an invited guest, was the top finisher in the 50 backstroke with a mark of 29.20.
