Alice Mills Among Top Aussies Committed to Mare Nostrum Series

CANET, France, April 13. THIS year's version of the Mare Nostrum Series will feature a strong Australian squad for the three-stop event. One of the top summer gatherings in the world, the Mare Nostrum Series will begin in Canet, France (June 9-10), move to Barcelona (June 13-14) and conclude in Monte Carlo, Monaco (June 16-17).

In addition to the number of elite European athletes who will take part, the Australian squad set to compete is stacked. One of the women looking for a sterling summer will be Alice Mills, who failed to qualify for the World Championships in the sprint-freestyle events. Mills is one of the globe's top sprinters, but was edged out for berths to Melbourne by Libby Lenton and Jodie Henry. Obviously, Mills has her sights set on qualifying for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Lenton and Leisel Jones will also be in action after producing sensational results at the World Championships. Lenton was the titlist in the 50 and 100 freestyles, along with the 100 butterfly. As for Jones, she roared to wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and added a silver medal in the 50 breaststroke.

For the Aussie men, Grant Hackett, Brenton Rickard and Eamon Sullivan will be the headliners. Hackett had a sub-par World Champs, managing only a bronze medal in the 400 free. Hackett was off his typical form in Melbourne, largely due to a lack of training caused by the focus on his personal life. Rickard was the silver medalist at the World Champs in the 200 breast and Sullivan earned bronze in the 100 freestyle.

The Aussie team that will compete at the Mare Nostrum Series consists of: Bronte Barratt, Leith Brodie, Grant Hackett, Jodie Henry, Leisel Jones, Andrew Lauterstein, Libby Lenton, Linda Mackenzie, Alice Mills, Kenrick Monk, Kylie Palmer, Jennifer Reilly, Stephanie Rice, Brenton Rickard, Eamon Sullivan, Tayliah Zimmer, Andrew Mewing, Frances Adcock, Angie Bainbridge, Craig Calder, Alicia Coutts, Ashley Delaney, Nick Ffrost, Sally Foster, Felicity Galvez, Belinda Hocking, Kirk Palmer, Cameron Prosser, Tarnee White and Stephanie Williams.
