Zandberg Takes 50 Free Title at South African National Champs

DURBAN, South Africa, April 11. RIDING high off his victory at the World Championships in the 50 backstroke, Gerhard Zandberg prevailed in the 50 freestyle Wednesday while racing at the South African National Championships. Zandberg won the sprint in 22.69, ahead of the 22.78 registered by Ryk Neethling.

Mandy Loots and Cameron van der Burgh also captured gold medals. Loots took top honors in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 2:11.68 while van der Burgh, the bronze medalist in the 50 breaststroke at the World Champs, won the 100 breast in 1:01.73. Meanwhile, George du Rand bettered the field in the 200 backstroke with a mark of 2:00.02.

Australia's Sophie Edington, competing as a visitor in Durban, posted the top times in the women's 50 free and 200 backstroke. Edington went 25.60 in the sprint-free event and clocked in at 2:13.76 in the 200 back.
