Men’s Water Polo Quarterfinals in the Books at Worlds

MELBOURNE, Australia, March 28. THE quarterfinal round of men's water polo action is in the books after an exciting day of action at the FINA World Championships.

15th-Place Match
New Zealand grabbed a 10-9 victory over Japan. Lachlan Tijsen and Timothy Grace nabbed hat tricks for New Zealand, while Satoshi Nagata led Japan with three goals as well.

13th-Place Match
China upended South Africa, 13-12, in a sudden death penalty shootout. Han Zhidong paced China with six goals, while teammate Yu Lijun accounted for three goals. Wayne Cowden and Rick Diesel each notched three goals for South Africa.

Classification 9-12
The United States downed Canada, 16-11, in a classification match. Tony Azevedo went off for six goals, while Aaron Feltham led Canada with four.

In the other classification match, Australia defeated Romania, 15-9. Gavin Woods paced Australia with four goals, while teammates Trent Franklin and Timothy Neesham each connected for hat tricks. Gheorghe Dunca led Romania with four goals.

Quarterfinals
Serbia crushed Greece, 8-3, to advance to semis. Filip Filipovic and Aleksandar Sapic led Serbia with two goals. Dimitros Mazis, Theodoros Chatzitheodorou and Antonios Vlontakis each notched a goal for Greece.

Croatia dominated Russia, 13-3, in its quarterfinal match. Zdeslav Vrdoljak led a balanced scoring attack with three goals for Croatia, while Aleksey Agarkov, Alexander Aksenov and Marat Zakirov each scored for Russia.

Spain edged Italy, 7-5, to move on to the semifinal round. Guillermo Molina and Marc Minguell led Spain with two goals, while Francesto Postiglione and Goran Fiorentini did the same for Italy.

In another quarterfinal thrashing, Hungary beat Germany, 13-6. Daniel Varga led Hungary with four goals, while Heiko Nossek accounted for half of Germany's scoring with three.
