Brother Rice Men Win First Title Under Michigan Division 1 Classification

YPSILANTI, Michigan, April 3. BROTHER Rice won its first state title under Michigan's Division 1 classification, scoring a meet-high 231 points.

Zeeland followed behind and claimed second place (207.5) while Northville edged out Grand Rapids Forest Hills for third place with 193 points.

University of Detroit-Jesuit's Tony Wahl erased Nick Walkotten of Jenison's 2003 Division 1 mark of 1:52.15 in the 200 IM with a winning time of 1:51.36. Wahl returned in the 100 butterfly and his second event of the meet in 49.52.

Brother Rice senior Chris Bagley captured the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle titles with times of 21.05 and 46.07, respectively.

Zeeland senior Jordan Diekema set a Division 1 record in his 50.63 100 backstroke performance. Evan Kobes of Holland set the former record of 50.80 in 2004.

Rockford senior Brian Keeley rounded out the Division 1 record breakers with a 100 breaststroke time of 56.73. Grant Burtch of Holland set the former 100 breaststroke mark of 57.14 back in 2004.

Zeeland's quartet of Jordan Diekema, Zach Pellegrini, Jeremy Sall and Drew Coffin overtook Brother Rice on the last 50 of the 200 medley relay, winning in 1:35.43. The Zeeland foursome of Diekema, Coffin, Josh Geschwendt and Sall ended the meet with a 3:07.45 victory in the 400 freestyle relay.

A trio of seniors took the top three diving spots. Lake Orion diver Brandon Figurski placed first with a 439.35 score. Roseville's Anthony Stadwick Jr. scored 408.05 points and took second while Grandville's David Nelson scored 378.85 points and took third.
