Action Picks Up During Second Day of Group Play in Men’s Water Polo at Worlds

MELBOURNE, Australia, March 22. THE second day of men's water polo competition concluded with some close matches as well as a few blow outs at the FINA World Championships held in Melbourne, Australia.

Group A
Romania upended New Zealand, 18-4, in Group A play. Cosmin Radu led a balance attack with a hat-trick for Romania, while Nicholas Grieve, Shaun Venter, Rob Tindall and Zoltan Boros each notched a goal for NZL.

In the other Group A match, Serbia downed Italy, 6-3. Aleksandar Sapic led Serbia with three goals, while Maurizio Felugo, Valerio Rizzo and Luigi di Costanzo each tallied a goal for Italy.

Group B
The United States rolled through South Africa, 14-4, for its second win of the championships. Tony Azevedo posted a match-high six goals to lead the Americans, while Etienne Le Roux, Kevin O'Brien, Wayne Cowden and Rick Diesel each recorded a goal for South Africa.

Croatia nipped Australia, 10-9, in the other Group B match, but no box score is available.

Group C
Spain picked up a 12-8 victory over Russia in Group C action. Felipe Perrone led all scorers with four goals for Spain, while teammate David Martin also registered a hat trick with three. Sergey Garbuzov led Russia with a hat trick of his own.

Greece double up China, 11-5, in the other Group C match. Christos Afroudakis and Georgios Afroudakis each tickled the twine three times to lead Greece, while Liang Zhongxing, Yu Lijun, Li Jun, Xie Junmin and Han Zhidong each notched a goal for China.

Group D
Germany cruised past Japan, 17-7, in the Group D opener. Heiko Nossek hit the back of the net five times for Germany, while teammate Florian Naroska also totaled a hat trick with three goals. Meanwhile, Kan Aoyagi led Japan with a hat trick as well.

In the other Group D match, Hungary dominated Canada, 19-3. The box score is not yet available.
