Russia Dominates Synchro Events; Wins Team Technical Final, Leads Duet Free Routine Prelims at Worlds

MELBOURNE, Australia, March 21. RUSSIA continued its mastery of the synchronized swimming events at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

Team Technical Final
Russia's contingent of Maria Gromova, Natalia Ischenko, Elvira Khasyanova, Olga Kuzhela, Anna Nasekina, Elena Ovtchinnikova, Svetlana Romashina and Anna Shorina easily won another gold medal for Russia with 99.000 points (49.500 for both execution and overall impression).

Japan's team of Naoko Kawashima, Chisa Kobayashi, Hiromi Kobayashi, Erika Komura, Ayako Matsumura, Emiko Suzuki, Erina Suzuki and Masako Tachibana took silver with 97.833 points (49.000 execution, 48.833 overall impression).

Spain's squad of Alba Cabello Rodilla, Ona Carbonell Ballestero, Andrea Fuentes Fache, Tina Fuentes Fache, Gemma Mengual Civil, Gisela Moron Rovira, Irina Rodriguez Alvarez and Paola Tirados Sanchez grabbed bronze with 97.167 points (48.500 execution, 48.667 overall impression).

The United States wound up taking fifth with 95.833 points.

Duet Free Routine Prelims
The Russian duo of Anastasia Davydova and Anastasia Ermakova led with 98.833 points (49.333 technical merit, 49.500 artistic impression), while Spain's pair of Gemma Mengual Civil and Paola Tirados Sanchez took second with 98.000 points (49.000 in both technical merit and artistic impression).

Meanwhile, Japan's team of Ayako Matsumura and Emiko Suzuki took third with 96.833 points (48.333 technical merit, 48.500 artistic impression).

The U.S. squad of Christina Jones and Andrea Nott placed fifth with 95.667 points (48.000 technical merit, 47.667 artistic impression).
