Industry News: Standard Chartered International Masters Hosts Singapore Masters Meet in August

SINGAPORE, March 14. TITLE sponsor Standard Chartered Bank helps kick-start initiative to put the island nation of Singapore on the Masters Swimming map. Singapore will play host to the inaugural Standard Chartered International Masters Swim Meet August 10-12, 2007.

Singapore has had a long tradition in swimming and the island nation with a population of only 4 million, has been a regional powerhouse in Southeast Asian swimming, matching more populous neighboring states like Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand amongst others, stroke for stroke in the pool.

Swimming is a popular recreational activity in a prosperous country where literally everyone has easy access to either a public or private swimming pool. A recent sports participation survey by the Singapore Sports Council polled swimming as the second-most popular sporting activity nationwide.

The Standard Chartered International Masters is the flagship event in the Standard Chartered Masters Swimming Series which is in its maiden year. The series provides a year round calendar of masters swim meets for Masters enthusiasts, organized by GENER8 Sports.

"We are looking to promote Masters swimming with the broad base of adult swimmers in Singapore and the region who swim recreationally and for fitness. Swimmers can benchmark their performance in a competitive environment and at the same time, enjoy a highly sociable experience in an atmosphere of fun, fitness and friendship," said David Lim, Chief Operating Officer for GENER8 Sports. "We hope to attract the interest of Masters swimming enthusiasts the world over who will come to take part and take in the sights in Singapore. We've planned the meet to accommodate time for sightseeing excursions and fringe activities to keep everyone entertained. The eve of the meet is Aug. 9, National Day in Singapore, a public holiday celebrating the Republic's National Day. It'll be an interesting time to come visit Singapore and watch the celebration parade and festivities as well."
