Stanford’s Breeden Sets NCAA Meet Record in 200 Fly; Auburn Secures Team Title

By Jason Marsteller

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 10. AFTER a long four-year reign by Mary DeScenza of Georgia came to an end with her graduation, Stanford's Elaine Breeden gave the Cardinal its eighth 200 fly title with an NCAA meet record time of 1:53.02.

The previous record of 1:53.36 stood since 2002 when Stanford's Shelly Ripple clocked a 1:53.23.

Arizona's Whitney Myers grabbed second place with a time of 1:53.75, while California's Dana Vollmer placed third in 1:54.30.

Auburn held a 496-443 advantage over Arizona after the event, while California (332.5) put a buffer in front of Stanford (312) for third. Georgia remained in fifth with 258 points. With a 53-point lead, even a relay DQ by Auburn is not going to do it for Arizona.

Congratulations to David Marsh for going out a winner on the women's side with his 11th combined national title. That puts him one behind Richard Quick's all-time record of 12. Will Marsh invoke the magic one more time and tie Quick before giving way to him at the end of the season?
