Marquette Sweeps Competition at Michigan Upper Peninsula High School Championships

MARQUETTE, Michigan, March 15. MARQUETTE Senior High School swept the competition at the Michigan Upper Peninsula High School Championships. The Marquette men compiled a meet-high 378.5 points on their way to a team title. Sault High placed second with 247.5 points while Kingsford High School scored 223 points and took third.

Marquette senior Joe Gallo captured first-place honors in both the 200 freestyle (1:58.54) as well as the 100 freestyle (51.60). Kingston's Andrew Lindstrom captured two titles as well. He edged the field in the 200 IM (2:15.42) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.32).

Marquette's 200 freestyle relay foursome of Gallo, Ian Blotter, Justin Roy and Johanne Dreisbach jumped out to an early start and held on, winning their first of two relay golds. Carl Vonck, Devin Greer, Roy and Gallo teamed up to snare the 400 freestyle relay title with a 3:39.74 time.

Marquette's Alex Dupras boasted the high score in the diving competition with a final score of 166.90. Marquette's Chris Wattsson and Westwood's Anthony Chantelois placed second and third with scores of 166.90 and 158.85, respectively.

The Marquette women showed similar dominance in its competition, taking the team top honors with 381 points. Houghton High School placed second with 279 points while Kingsford placed third and compiled 161 points.

Marquette's 200 medley relay set the tone for the meet. The quartet of Heather Nobert, Lauren Humphrey, Jennifer Gallagher and Olivia Montgomery won the event and set a meet record with a 1:57.26 time. Marquette's 2004 relay set the former standard of 1:58.67.

The grouping of Kim Thompson, Serra Hasenauer, Gallagher and Montgomery blew past the field in the 200 freestyle relay with a winning time of 1:47.21. Marquette's 400 freestyle relay team of Krista Fuller, Nobert, Humphrey and Thompson also snared a gold medal with a 3:56.85 time.

Thompson schooled the sprinting competition with her swims in the 50 and the 100 freestyle. She took a first-place time of 25.49 in the 50 and created a four-second spread between herself and the second-place competitor in the 100 with a 56.70 time.

Humphrey beat the 200 IM field by nearly 10 seconds en route to a 2:25.44 win. She took the 500 freestyle later in the meet by a smaller margin of six seconds with a 5:50.94 time.

Nobert took top honors in both the 200 freestyle (2:06.52) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.24). Marquette also swept the diving competition. Lindsey Noble won the women's diving title with 142.55 points. Jessica Maki and Heather Cowan took second and third with scores of 134.60 and 133.40, respectively.
