Cal Baptist Sweeps NAIA Titles; Rosberg Sets Another NAIA Record

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, March 3. Cal Baptist used a potent blend of top-flight talent and depth points to claim both the men's and women's NAIA Championships held in San Antonio, Texas over the weekend.

CBU's women won with 783.5 points, while Simon Fraser took second with 584 points. SCAD finished third with 459 points, while Lindenwood (298) and Cumberlands (290.5) closed out the top three.

In the men's meet, Cal Baptist dominated with 937.5 points, while Lindenwood finished second with 499 points. SCAD picked up another third-place effort with 402 points, while Simon Fraser (384) and Cumberlands (355) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Meanwhile, Simon Fraser's Kathryn Rosberg continued her sensational meet with a 1650 free NAIA record, cutting almost 10 seconds off her previous standard with a time of 16:43.37.

Women's 1650 freestyle
Simon Fraser's Kathryn Rosberg lowered her 1650 free NAIA record with a time of 16:43.37 to drop nearly 10 seconds off her previous standard of 16:51.80 set in 2005. Meanwhile, CBU's Krista Chacon took second in 17:27.80, while Cumberlands' Alex Robertson finished third in 17:40.16.

Women's 200 backstroke
CBU's Nicole Shipman claimed the 200 back title in 2:05.49 with a comeback victory, while Simon Fraser's Tina Hoang finished second in 2:05.83. Illinois Tech's Amanda Babicz took third in 2:08.02.

Men's 200 backstroke
Lindenwood's Thomas Bourdin captured another title with a time of 1:48.69, while CBU's Justin Vergara grabbed second in 1:52.72. Meanwhile, Cumberlands' Andrzej Lenard finished third in 1:55.75.

Women's 100 freestyle
Cal Baptist's Jenelle Furuto came with less than a second of Simon Fraser's Sharon Turner's NAIA record of 51.03 set in 1993 with a winning time of 51.81. SCAD went 2-3 in the event as Cassie Dixon placed second in 52.28, while Elizabeth Harr took third in 52.29.

Men's 100 freestyle
Another NAIA standard nearly fell as CBU's Russell Thompson clocked a 44.85, within half-a-second of the record time of 44.49 set by Drury's Kelly Kremer in 1991. Simon Fraser took the next two spots as Kyle Smerdon placed second in 45.13, while Randall Krall turned in a third-place 46.14.

Women's 200 breaststroke
Simon Fraser's Courtenay Mulhern grabbed the 200 breast title in 2:23.45, while CBU's Elena Zanone (2:24.60) and Elaine Hunter (2:25.25) placed second and third, respectively.

Men's 200 breaststroke
SCAD's Thomas Gibson won a close one with a time of 2:04.51, a mere .05 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Simon Fraser's Sean Nugent (2:04.56). CBU's Sean Moore rounded out the rest of the podium in 2:05.03.

Women's 200 butterfly
In another close battle, Asbury's Kerry Hancock touched first in 2:07.07, while SCAD's Rachel Fritts finished just behind in 2:07.52. Simon Fraser's Addie Kolybaba snared third in 2:08.41.

Men's 200 butterfly
A pair of swimmers eclipsed the former NAIA record of 1:49.33 set by Oral Roberts' Diego Perdomo in 1991 as CBU's Jan Tichy set his second standard in as many days with a time of 1:47.48 for the win. Simon Fraser's Niels Muntzenburger clocked a second-place time of 1:47.83, while Illinois Tech's Ryan Feuerstein placed a distant third in 1:51.57.

Women's 400 freestyle relay
Simon Fraser's team of Tina Hoang, Kathryn Rosberg, Addie Kolybaba and Jessica Verheyden grabbed the win in 3:28.99, fairly close to the NAIA record of 3:28.49 set by Simon Fraser in 1993. Meanwhile, SCAD's contingent of Elizabeth Harr, Emily Cardone-Dennis, Megan Lawless and Cassie Dixon finished second in 3:30.89, while CBU's foursome of Katelyn Butler, Chelsey Songy, Stephanie Jung and Jenelle Furuto took third in 3:33.36.

Men's 400 freestyle relay
Cal Baptist's quartet of Jan Tichy, Alan Ogden, Mike Looy and Russell Thompson easily won in 3:02.77, while Simon Fraser's Randall Krall, Kyle Smerdon, Niels Muntzenburger and Luke Armstrong placed second in 3:05.26. Meanwhile, Illinois Tech's squad of Ryan Feuerstein, E-Fann Saung, Luke Shorette and Andrew Mehr grabbed third in 3:07.82.
