Cal Baptist Holds Onto Leads at NAIA Championships; Tichy Breaks 100 Fly Record

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, March 2. IN the third day of competition at the NAIA Championships held in San Antonio, Texas, Cal Baptist remained in front of both the men's and women's meets. Meanwhile, CBU's Jan Tichy broke a 16-year-old NAIA record in the men's 100 butterfly with a 48.40.

In the women's meet, CBU is in first with 533.5 points, while Simon Fraser trails in second with 417 points. SCAD is in third with 311 points, while Biola (215), Lindenwood (212) and Illinois Tech (212) round out the top five.

For the men, CBU leads with 652.5 points, while Lindenwood holds second with 369 points. SCAD (292), Simon Fraser (265) and Illinois Tech (256) comprise the rest of the top five.

Women's Three-meter diving
Simon Fraser's Laura Sherer claimed her second title with a 478.45 in the three-meter. Meanwhile, Illinois Tech's Julia Northrop finished second with 428.20 points, while Cal Baptist's Lindsey Cline took third with 399.80 points.

Women's 200 freestyle relay
Simon Fraser's team of Tina Hoang, Courtenay Mulhern, Addie Kolybaba and Jessica Verheyden touched out Cal Baptist's foursome of Jenelle Furuto, Stephanie Jung, Krista Chacon and Katelyn Butler for the title in a tightly-contested race with SFU clocking a 1:36.02 and CBU turning in a 1:36.12. Right behind, SCAD's squad of Julie Glaser, Elizabeth Harr, Megan Lawless and Cassie Dixon took third in 1:36.84.

Men's 200 freestyle relay
Cal Baptist's quartet of Russell Thompson, Brian Jack, Alan Ogden and Mike Looy ran away with the crown in 1:24.44. Illinois Tech's team of Ryan Feuerstein, E-Fann Saung, Luke Shorette and Andrew Mehr placed second in 1:24.44, while Lindenwood's contingent of Jacob Kovaric, Jon Lau, Ivo Ivanov and Chris Ricketts finished third in 1:24.74.

Women's 400 IM
Simon Fraser's Courtenay Mulhern destroyed the field with a time of 4:31.37, while SCAD's Emily Cardone-Dennis finished second in 4:38.21. Meanwhile, Cal Baptist's Elena Zanone closed out the top three in 4:38.57.

Men's 400 IM
In the second runaway win in a row, CBU's Brad Terwilliger cruised to a win in 4:01.16, well ahead of teammate Tim Olson's second-place time of 4:07.75. Simon Fraser's David Geary placed third in 4:08.90.

Women's 100 butterfly
Simon Fraser's Addie Kolybaba clinched the 100 fly national title in a time of 56.30, while Lindenwood's Erin Nakamoto placed second in 58.27. CBU's Jenelle Furuto wound up in third with a time of 58.45.

Men's 100 butterfly
The 16-year-old NAIA record of Oral Roberts' Diego Perdomo (48.92) set in 1991 didn't stand a chance as a trio of swimmers eclipsed the time. CBU's Jan Tichy came away with the standard in a first-place time of 48.40, while Simon Fraser's Niels Muntzenburger (48.53) and SCAD's Michael Regnier (48.73) grabbed second and third place, respectively.

Women's 200 freestyle
Another standard nearly fell as Simon Fraser's Kathryn Rosberg continued her stellar meet. She clocked a time of 1:51.14, just .12 seconds off the 1991 record 1:51.02 set by Simon Fraser's Sharon Turner. Meanwhile, CBU's Katelyn Butler touched second in 1:53.82, while SFU's Suzanne Wuolle placed third in 1:55.07.

Men's 200 freestyle
Cal Baptist completely dominated the event with a top-four sweep. Russell Thompson won in 1:40.30, while Alan Ogden (1:41.56) and Jeff Heinz (1:41.78) earned second and third, respectively. Michal Budny completed the sweep with a fourth-place 1:42.86.

Women's 100 breaststroke
Sparked by an incredible performance by the men's team, CBU's women went 1-2-3 in the 100 breast. Arienne Gachupin picked up a close victory with a time of 1:06.81, while Elaine Hunter took second in 1:06.92. Stephanie Jung closed out the sweep with a third-place 1:07.11.

Men's 100 breaststroke
SCAD's Thomas Gibson won the men's 100 breast in 56.14, while Simon Fraser's Sean Nugent took second in 56.24 just behind. Lindenwood's Ivo Ivanov rounded out the podium in 57.72.

Women's 100 backstroke
SFU went 1-3 in the 100 back as Addie Kolybaba won in 57.86 and Tina Hoang grabbed third in 58.43. CBU's Nicole Shipman split the difference with a second-place time of 57.94.

Men's 100 backstroke
Cal Baptist's Jan Tichy snagged another win with a 49.39 effort in the 100 back. Lindenwood's Thomas Bourdin finished second in 49.96, while Simon Fraser's Randall Krall took third in 52.40, just edging SCAD's Michael Regnier (52.41).

Women's 400 medley relay
Simon Fraser's team of Tina Hoang, Kathryn Rosberg, Addie Kolybaba and Jessica Verheyden won the race in 3:53.39, while CBU's squad of Nicole Shipman, Arienne Gachupin, Jenelle Furuto and Katelyn Butler took second in 3:57.42. SCAD's foursome of Julie Glaser, Emily Cardone-Dennis, Rachel Fritts and Cassie Dixon placed third in 3:59.58.

Men's 400 medley relay
SFU's team of Randall Krall, Sean Nugent, Niels Muntzenburger and Kyle Smerdon claimed the title in 3:21.20, while CBU's foursome of Brad Terwilliger, Sean Moore, Jan Tichy and Russell Thompson took second in 3:21.32. Lindenwood's squad of Thomas Bourdin, Ivo Ivanov, Jon Lau and Chris Ricketts took third in 3:25.88.
