Princeton Claims 19th EISL Title

PRINCETON, New Jersey, February 24. THE 2007 Princeton men's team used superior depth and talent to repeat as EISL champions Saturday night at DeNunzio Pool, and it used the same formula in the final day that has worked so well for two years. By placing several competitors in both the swimming and diving competitions, Princeton kept accumulating points at a pace no other team could handle. The win also allowed the Class of 2007 to celebrate a league championship in its final meet at DeNunzio Pool.

Princeton lapped the field with a final score of 1405 points, while Harvard grabbed second place with 1220.5 points. Yale (1036 points) edged out Columbia for third overall by five points.

The final session started with the 1650 free, and the Tigers picked up third- and fourth-place finishes by Robert Griest and Dave Ashley. Griest, a sophomore and one of Princeton's top scorers for the weekend, finished in 15:21.42, while Ashley finished just behind in 15:24.95.

The 200 back was the only event without a Princetonian in the final Saturday evening. Senior Mike Zee won the consolation final in a time of 1:49.11, while Dan O'Connor finished 12th overall in 1:49.74.

Mike Carter placed seventh in the 100 free in 45.47, while Doug Lennox, who ends the weekend as the only individual champion for Princeton (Friday's 100 fly), took eighth in 47.70. The Tigers placed two more finalists in the 200 breast, as Will Schaffer took fourth in 2:02.37 and Easton Chen took eighth in 2:05.13.

By that point, Princeton had firm control of the meet. By the end of the 200 butterfly, an annual strong point for Princeton, the Tigers cleared the field. Cornell's Mike Smit, the high-point scorer in his four-year career, won the event in 1:46.44. Princeton placed four of the next seven swimmers, including 2006 All-America Meir Hasbani, who took second in 1:47.04, and Dan Eckel, who finished third in 1:47.20. Lennox added a sixth-place finish (1:48.12), and Tim Ruse placed eighth in 1:51.29.

Princeton also went 2-3 in the 3-meter diving competition. A terrific final dive by Stuart Malcolm leapfrogged him into third place overall with 325.80 points. Freshman Mike Papageorge finished a strong first EISL meet with a likewise great dive, moving temporarily into first place with 347.45 points. It wasn't until the final dive of the meet when he was surpassed, but Yale's Jeff Lichtenstein did end up winning the event with 359.00 points.

The team of Carter, Jon Hartmann, Schaffer and Lennox ended the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 400 free relay (3:00.85).
