Richmond and UMass Remain In Lead After Day Three of Atlantic 10 Championships

BUFFALO, New York, February 23. THE University of Massachusetts' men and the University of Richmond's women still prove their prowess as they lead with scores of 493 and 532, respectively, after the third day of the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's and Women's Championships at the Flickinger Center.

For the women, the University of Massachusetts is in second (532), Duquesne University is in third (281.5), Fordham University is in fourth (271.5), followed by La Salle in fifth (257.5), Saint Louis University in sixth (247), St. Bonaventure in seventh (246.5), Xavier in eighth (242), George Washington University in ninth (109) and the University of Rhode Island in tenth (69).

In the first race of the night, the 400-yard individual medley, the University of Richmond posted the top times. The duo, consisting of junior Jessica Witt and senior Caitlin Geary, won gold and silver with times of 4:20.86 and 4:27.13, respectively. Freshman Laura Robertson added points for St. Louis, finishing with a time of 4:36.08, good for third.

St. Louis sophomore, Elena Ramirez, grabbed first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.93. Katie Sieben, a Richmond freshman, placed second in a time of 55.90, while Massachusetts' sophomore, Christa Narus, touched in 58.37, good for third.

In a tight race, Caitlin Napoli, a Fordham freshman, narrowly touched out her competitors when she snagged first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.71. Duquesne senior, Melissa Johnson, touched just one one-hundredth of a second behind Napoli, finishing in 1:51.72. Joanna Rakoczy, a freshman from Richmond, nabbed third in a time of 1:51.92.

During the 100-yard breast, Richmond sophomore Lauren Beaudreau touched in 1:01.81, good for first place and snagged both an Erie Community College Pool record and an A-10 record. St. Bonaventure junior Anneli Johnson grabbed second and Richmond junior Anastasia Lau claimed third with times of 1:03.27 and 1:04.06, respectively.

Underclassmen displayed dominance in the 100-yard backstroke when Richmond freshman Alex Helland, Fordham's Napoli and Xavier sophomore Mary Catherine Mahon placed first, second and third, with times of 56.86, 57.34 and 58.51, respectively.

In the 400-medley relay, Richmond's Helland, Beaudreau, Sieben and Rakoczy touched out the competition in a time of 3:47.43. St. Bonaventure, led by sophomore Tracy Rathke, Johnson, senior Danielle Grobmyer and freshman Allison Smith, placed second with a time of 3:53.12.

On the boards, Saint Louis freshman Anna Larson swept the competition with a score of 522.10, shattering an A-10 three-meter diving record while earning a first-place finish. University of Massachusetts' sophomore Karen Upperco and senior Mary Jenkins took second and third place scoring 523.50 and 521.20, respectively.

For the men, Duquesne University trails UMass in second (341.5), St. Bonaventure in third (322), La Salle in fourth (278), Xavier in fifth (251), Fordham in sixth (206), George Washington University in seventh (193.5), the University of Rhode Island in eighth (154) and St. Louis University in ninth (148).

George Washington sophomore, David Zenk, set the pace for the men during the 400-individual medley. He captured a new A-10 record after he bested the previous record by one one-hundredth of a second, finishing with a time of 3:54.94. Xavier senior Dave Janszen took second in a time of 3:57.17, and St. Bonaventure freshman Mariusz Michalik claimed third, touching in 3:59.26.

During the 100-yard butterfly, Duquesne senior Eric Bugby, edged past Massachusetts' junior, Zack Priest, with a time of 49.84. Priest placed in 50.06. Shane Jenkins, a senior for Xavier, rounded out the top three in a time of 50.37.

Senior Chris Ekimoff captured a first-place finish for St. Bonaventure in the 200-freestyle, touching in a time of 1:40.76. Fordham freshman, Ryan Coombs, claimed second in a time of 1:41.22, and Sean Connors-McBride, a senior from La Salle, rounded out the top three in 1:41.63.

St. Bonaventure picked up a second victory in the 100-yard breast after junior Scott Jordan touched in 56.56. Jake Hogue, a Massachusetts' senior placed second with 57.17, and sophomore Matt Marcus of Xavier nabbed third in 57.39.

Massachusetts' senior, Evan Swisher, claimed gold in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.71. Duquesne's duo of Bugby and senior Scott Darwin nabbed silver and bronze with times of 49.72 and 50.79, respectively.

In the 400-medley relay, Massachusetts' proved dominate when Swisher, Hogue, Priest and Moliere touched in 3:21.23. Duquesne's Darwin, freshman Ian Walsh, Bugby and senior Ed Wicker followed in a time of 3:23.13.
