Arizona Wildcats Defend Pac-10 Title

LONG BEACH, California, February 17. THE No. 4 Arizona women's swimming and diving team defended its Pac-10 title Saturday, climbing seven spots from the first day of competition to win the meet with 1481.5 points and two individual victories.

This is the third Pac-10 Championship victory for the women in school history, as they won in 2000, 2006 and 2007.

"It took us all the way to the last day of competition, but we took the lead," head coach Frank Busch said. "I'm very happy for the girls and proud of their hard work. It was a tough four days, but they were so determined and that is what really made the difference in this meet."

Beginning tonight's action was freshman Joni Zimmerman, who finished ninth in the 1650 free with a time of 16:33.72. Freshman Caitlin Iversen finished fourth in the 200 back (1:57.32), while classmate Andrea Boritzke finished fifth (1:57.68) and sophomore Kathryn Thompson finished 12th (1:58.76).

Arizona dominated the 100 free, as junior Lacey Nymeyer finished second with a time of 48.40, sophomore Lindsey Kelly finished fifth (49.64) and sophomore Anna Turner finished eighth (50.09). Sophomore Taylor Baughman finished ninth (46.42) in the consolation finals of the event, while sophomore Lara Jackson finished 10th (50.13) and freshman Leoné Vorster finished 11th (50.13).

In the 200 breast, junior Jacquelyn Craft finished third with a time of 2:11.72, as freshman Annie Chandler came in fifth (2:13.02) and sophomore Jessica Embick finished sixth (2:14.95).

Senior Whitney Myers finished sixth in the 200 fly with a time of 1:56.55, while freshman Jenny Forster finished seventh (1:59.13), freshman Ana Agy finished eighth (1:59.92) and senior Emily Strouse finished 10th (2:01.16).

The 400 free relay team comprised of Nymeyer, Baughman, Kelly and Myers ended the meet by finishing second with a time of 3:16.49.
