14 YEAR-OLD LIESEL JONES: A NEW AUSSIE SWIM STAR

PERTH, April 11. PREVIOUSLY unknown 14-year-old Leisel Jones, swam the 4th fastest all-timeby an Australian in the 200m breaststroke at the National Age Championships(LC) last night to be well placed to take a berth in the Olympic Games
team. She swam 2:28.38, which would have placed her 10th in the world last
year. Dual Olympic medalist Samantha Riley is the only Australian to have
swum faster since Atlanta in 1996. This event should produce a very
competitive race at the Olympic trials next month, with Riley having put a
series of injuries behind her together with the successful return to the
pool by the former world record-holder Rebecca Brown. Jones also qualified
fastest for the final in her preferred distance, the 100m breaststroke, in
1:09.94 which will be swum tonight.

PERTH, April 12. BRISBANE schoolgirl Leisel Jones followed her excellent 200m breaststroke
performance yesterday in the National Age Championships (LC) with a world
class swim over the 100m. Her time of 1:08.30 was the second fastest ever
by an Australian behind Samantha Riley. It also placed her fourth fastest in
the world this year behind American Megan Quann (1:07.54), world record-holder Penny
Heyns (1:07.67)of South Africa and American Kristy Kowal (1:07.85).
