Northview, Parkview Win Women’s, Men’s Georgia 5A State Championships

ATLANTA, Georgia, February 15. NORTHVIEW High School won its initial title in swimming as it took the women's championship with 225.5 points.

Parkview's star power was not able to trump the depth of the Northview women's team. Parkview took second overall with 188 points, just squeaking past defending champion Centennial's 185.

Kristen Redmond, a Centennial sophomore, swept the 200 and 500 freestyles. She earned an All-American automatic qualifying time with her 1:50.75 effort in the 200 freestyle and she added another automatic qualifying time in her 500 freestyle (4:55.52).

Sprayberry sophomore Kristine Polley rounded out the double event winners by taking home two victories in both the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke. Polley's 200 IM time (2:04.34) gave her an All-American automatic qualifying time, and her 1:03.96 time in the 100 breaststroke also gave her All-American honors.

Additionally, Walton freshman Erin Reisinger set a pool record in the 100 back with a 55.86 to erase the 56.04 notched by Beverly Walker of Walton on Feb. 22, 2004.

On the men's side, Parkview fended off Brookwood. Parkview won the team title with 254 points while Brookwood fell short with 208.

Andrew Rutherfurd, a Chattahoochee senior, took top honors in both the 200 IM (1:55.54) and the 100 breaststroke (59.08). Both times will put Rutherfurd in the running for All-American consideration.

Peachtree Ridge senior Scott Royal claimed both the 200 freestyle (1:42.55) and the 500 freestyle (4:38.87).

Colquitt County took the top four spots in the women's diving competition, including a first place, state record-setting performance by freshman Kelsey Goodman. Sarah Ohr of Harrison High School set the old state record back in February of 2005.

Junior Ryan Helms of Colquitt County followed Goodman's course of action, as he took home a gold medal and a state record with a score of 615.00. Webb Worthington of Wesleyan set the previous mark in February of 2005.
