Cortland Men, Oswego Women Lead SUNYAC Championships

BUFFALO, New York — The SUNY Cortland men's swimming and diving team has taken a slight lead in the team standings following the second day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming and Diving Championships. The Red Dragons, second after the opening day, lead the field with 489 points, slightly ahead of Geneseo's 483.5 points. One the women's side, Oswego leads with 532, followed by Geneseo at 438.5. Cortland's women slipped from second to third in the team standings with 419 points.

Senior Andy Chevalier (Chazy/Chazy Central Rural) earned top honors in the 400-yard individual medley for the fourth consecutive season with his winning time of 4:13.02. Chevalier is now a four-time SUNYAC champion in both the 200-yard and 400-yard individual medleys. Sophomore Drew Hilker (Ithaca) won the league 100-yard butterfly title in 52.87 seconds, while junior Brett Humphreys (Amsterdam) posted an NCAA "B" cut in the 100-yard breaststroke with his second-place time of
58.55 seconds.

Cortland placed four swimmers in the 400-yard IM finals. In addition to Chevalier's win, senior Pat Connolly (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) finished second (4:17.13), Humphreys placed fifth (4:20.09) and sophomore Dave Dow (Glastonbury, CT) finished eighth (4:26.75, 4:25.72 in prelims). The Red Dragons earned runner-up finishes in both of Friday's relays. The 200- yard medley relay team of freshman Ryan Brooks (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville), Humphreys, Hilker and junior Alan Marcel (Central Islip) finished in 1:35.93, missing the school record by 0.82 seconds. The 800-yard freestyle relay of Chevalier, Hilker, junior Jeremy Cuebas (Brentwood) and freshman Daniel Evans (Hamburg) finished in 7:05.31.

Sophomore Brett Poffenbarger (Owego/Owego Free Academy) and sophomore H. Austin Rhoads (Orchard Park) placed third (59.81) and fourth (1:02.13), respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke. Freshman Jeff Moessinger (Buffalo/Iroquois) was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (53.49) and Evans finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.10, 1:45.67 in prelims).

Cortland's other top-eight finishers included fifth-place showings by Cuebas in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.77) and Brooks in the 100-yard backstroke (54.61) and a seventh-place finish by freshman Caleb Vansickle (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.96).

Although Cortland's women did not finish first in any of the day's events, the Red Dragons did break three school records. Freshman Krista Bergquist (West Islip) broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke with her preliminary time of 1:00.76, then finished second in the finals in 1:00.97. The other two records came during third-place relay finishes.

Bergquist, freshman Taylor Houseman (Wellsville), senior Nikki LaBarge (Morrisonville/Peru) and senior Allie Houseman (Wellsville) were clocked in 1:50.93 in the 200-yard medley relay, while freshman Katie Molzan (Plattsburgh/Peru), freshman Megan Donlevy (Lake Grove/Sachem North), senior Krista Lennox (Williamsville/Williamsville East) and sophomore Lauren Friedlander (Woodbury/Syosset) finished the 800-yard freestyle relay in 8:04.60.

Taylor Houseman earned a runner-up finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.34), missing a school record by less than two- tenths of a second. Molzan placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.99), about three-fourths of a second off a school record, and LaBarge was third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.33).

Junior Sarah O'Loughlin (Pleasantville) finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.31) and seventh in the 400-yard individual medley (4:52.74, 4:49.78 in prelims), Allie Houseman was seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.90, 1:09.36 in prelims), Friedlander finished eighth in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.35, 1:59.90 in prelims) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.58, 1:02.76 in prelims), and freshman Samantha Buckley (Holbrook/Sachem North) touched the wall eighth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:53.87, 4:53.61 in prelims).

The meet, held at the Flickinger Center at Erie Community College, will conclude on Saturday.
