Hi Guys,
Just another day in paradise here at Indiana University. I woke up fairly early this morning to go in and meet the coaches for a bit of a wake up swim (something really just to get us used to competing in the morning as well as at night). After a quick 1000, I had a snack and headed off to my first class. Three hours later, I was at home having a bit more to eat before heading to my favorite part of swim training – our lifting.

This year we have been extremely lucky to be working with our head strength coach Mike Basgier. Mike is an absolute asset to the team and has transformed us from mere putty to hard, defined rock and we are a better team because of his efforts. Today was our last day as a team in the weight room and we spent our time doing some light plyometrics and medicine ball work before some ab work as a group.

After our lift session, we headed over to the pool for another session:

My warm up was 4 x 200's – swim, kick, pull, swim. During my warm up, I really like to shake things out and especially during the pull, work on my catch and really feeling the water as I pull. From there, I did a set of 4 x 75's and 4 x 50's working the last 25 of each trying to swim it like I would swim the end of my races. 200 pull and 200 kick later I spent some time in the diving well practicing underwater turns. I find when I do this I train my body to turn in the tightest ball possible. After this, I had some variable sprints before I spent some time with Mark Wetzel and Steffan 'The Gun' Troxel working starts. A quick dip in the hot tub and I was on my home.

The rest of the evening was spent doing some light stretching and eating healthy before getting to bed for an early night.

Today really hit home that Big Tens are next week. The women's team began its quest for another title today with some good swims. It will be interesting to see how they perform tonight during finals. But as for the men's team, everyday that goes by everyone seems to be getting more and more anxious to getting down to some old fashioned racing.

Until tomorrow,

Matt
