Meet of the Week Recap: Princeton Men Win H-Y-P Meet, Harvard Knocks Off Yale

PRINCETON, New Jersey, February 4. IN the final SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week for the weekend, the men of Princeton scored victories over Harvard (190-163) and Yale (228-125), while Harvard notched a win over Yale, 184-169.

Harvard's top talent that accounted for five event wins on the day and 10 overall could not overcome Princeton's depth, which nickel-and-dimed its way to victory. Meanwhile, Yale's Alex Righi shined as the top individual with a trio of individual titles throughout the meet.

200 medley relay
Harvard took the first title of the second day of competition when Jason Degnan-Rojeski, Geoff Rathgeber, Dan Jones and Pat Quinn hit the wall first in 1:30.91. Meanwhile, Princeton's foursome of Mike Zee, John LaMonaca, Mike Baity and Mike Carter took second in 1:31.19, while Yale's team of Alex Righi, Colin Stalnecker, Chris Pool and Geof Zann finished third in 1:31.41.

400 IM
Harvard's Geoff Rathgeber claimed his second title of the meet with a B-cut time of 3:49.36 to win the 400 IM. Princeton's Meir Hasbani placed just behind with a B cut of his own in 3:52.14, while teammate Tim Ruse took third in 3:58.81. Yale's top finish came from Billy Rubenstein's seventh-place 4:00.14.

100 freestyle
Yale's Alex Righi won his third crown of the meet with a B-cut time of 44.61 to win the two-lap free. Princeton's Doug Lennox placed second in 44.98, while Harvard's Pat Quinn rounded out the top three in 45.17.

200 backstroke
Yale's Tom Robinson earned his team's second title of the day with a first-place time of 1:48.63. Princeton's Dan O'Connor snagged second place with a time of 1:48.92, while Harvard's Jason Degnan-Rojeski closed out the podium with a 1:49.97.

100 butterfly
Princeton's Doug Lennox hit the wall first for his second title of the meet with a B-cut time of 48.20. Harvard then went 2-3 with Bill Jones (48.85) and Dan Jones (49.03) taking second and third place, respectively. Yale's Chris Pool snared fourth in 49.99.

500 freestyle
Harvard swept the top-two in the middle distance event with Eric Lynch touching first in 4:27.94, while teammate Sam Wollner placed second in 4:27.96. Yale's Andrew Foss finished third in 4:30.19, while Princeton's best finish came by way of a fourth-place time of 4:31.00 from Dave Ashley.

Three-meter diving
Princeton's Mike Papageorge swept the diving events with a tally of 344.50 points, while teammate Stuart Malcolm recorded a second-place effort of 314.10 points. Harvard's Luke Sanders took third with 303.20 points, while Yale's Doug Scott picked up fifth with 280.50 points.

200 breaststroke
Princeton's Meir Hasbani captured his team's fourth crown of the day with a first-place time of 2:04.99, while teammate Mike Ott finished third in 2:05.59. Yale's Colin Stalnecker split the difference with a second-place time of 2:05.29, while Harvard's best finish came with a seventh-place time of 2:06.57 from Joe Christiana.

400 freestyle relay
Harvard completed a strong second day with its fifth title when David Guernsey, Jordan Waterman, Bill Jones and Pat Quinn touched first in 3:01.44. Yale's team of Andrew Foss, Chris Pool, Geof Zann and Tom Robinson took second in 3:04.97, while Princeton's squad of Robert Griest, Mike Baity, Chris D'Ambrosia and Mike Zee finished third in 3:06.89.
