Arizona Teams Shut Down Arizona State

TUCSON, Arizona, February 3. THE No. 4 Arizona women's and the No. 5 men's swimming and diving teams completed the final dual meet competition of the 2006-07 season this afternoon, as the women defeated No. 23 ASU 174-114 and the men posted a 178-95 victory against the No. 21 Sun Devils.

"This was a very good (dual meet) season," head coach Frank Busch said. "It's always nice to beat ASU, but now I'm really looking forward to the next couple of months. We are in a typical place for this time of year where nothing comes easy for us. The only way to change that is to rest and get polished up for the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships."

The women's team (8-2, 4-2 Pac-10) won 11 of 16 events during today's competition, beginning with the 200 medley relay comprised of redshirt freshman Justine Schluntz, freshman Annie Chandler, sophomore Lara Jackson and junior Lacey Nymeyer, which won with a time of 1:41.89. In the 1000 free, freshman Joni Zimmerman finished first with a time of 10:07.96.

In the 200 free, the Wildcats took the top-three places, as Nymeyer won the event with a time of 1:48.94, freshman Leoné Vorster, who joined the Wildcats in January from South Africa, finished second (1:51.68) and senior Whitney Myers finished third (1:51.74).

Freshman Ana Agy and Schluntz tied for first-place in the 100 back with a time of 55.93 and in the 100 breast, Chandler finished first (1:02.30), sophomore Jessica Embick finished second (1:04.00), and junior Jacquelyn Craft finished third (1:04.08). Freshman Jenny Forster won the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.95 and senior Emily Strouse finished second (2:03.86); while Jackson finished first in the 50 free (23.24).

Nymeyer won her second individual event in the 100 free, finishing with a time of 50.93, while sophomore Anna Turner finished second (51.24) and sophomore Lindsey Kelly finished third (51.83). Craft finished first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:15.88 and Agy finished second in the 100 fly (54.83). Freshman Andrea Boritzke won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:06.36 and classmate Caitlin Iversen finished second (2:07.04).

Finishing off today's competition was the 200 free relay team of Jackson, Kelly, senior Kathryn Elofson and Schluntz, which finished second with a time of 1:33.72.

On the diving side, senior Megan MacDonald won the 3-meter event with 268.73 points, while senior Holly Kast finished third in the 1-meter with 218.77 points.

"ASU always brings a good team so it's good to go up against them as our final competition before the big meets," head diving coach Michele Mitchell said. "Most of the divers are competing at the level they should be and I'm very optimistic going into the Pac-10 Championships."

The men's team (6-3, 3-2 Pac-10) also won 11 of 16 events beginning with the 200 medley relay of freshman Jake Tapp, junior Ivan Barnes, junior Albert Subirats and freshman Jordan Smith, which won with a time of 1:29.48.

Junior Matt Biel won the 1000 free with a time of 9:11.94, and sophomore Nicolas Nilo won the 200 free with a time of 1:38.14. In the 100 back, senior Adam Ritter and Tapp took the top two spots, as Ritter finished first (49.69) and Tapp finished second (50.20).

In the 100 breast, sophomore Josh Arreguin finished first with a time of 55.93 and Barnes finished second with a time of 56.37. Junior Darren Maxwell finished first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:50.19 and sophomore David Pursley finished second (1:51.41).

Three Wildcats dominated the 50 free, as Nilo finished first (20.48), Smith finished second (20.72) and Ritter was third (20.87). Ritter won his second individual race in the 100 free with a time of 44.51 and Smith finished second with a time of 45.52.

The Wildcats swam exhibition races in three different events, each posting a time that was good enough to take first-place. Freshman Bryan O'Connor swam a time of 1:48.55 in the 200 back, Arreguin swam a time of 2:03.01 in the 200 breast and freshman Jean Basson swam a time of 4:30.43 in the 500 free.

Junior Darian Townsend finished first in the 100 fly with a time of 48.93 and O'Connor finished first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:52.07.

The Arizona ‘C' 200 free relay team of Smith, freshman Joel Greenshields, Ritter and freshman Scott Jackson finished first with a time of 1:23.09.

In the diving well, redshirt junior Matt Bisordi finished second in both springboard events, posting 325.04 points in the 1-meter and 321.68 in the 3-meter.

Arizona will return to action when the women's swim team travels to Long Beach, Calif. on Feb 14-17, while the men's and women's diving teams will travel to Seattle, Wash. to compete at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships. The men's swim team will compete at the conference championships on Feb. 21-24.
