Meet of the Week Recap: No. 11 Rowan Women Outlast Kutztown, 157-103; KU’s Jeppesen Sets Pool Record

KUTZTOWN, Pennsylvania, February 3. IN our Division II SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week, the No. 11 Rowan women outlasted a scrappy Kutztown team, 157-103, at Keystone Natatorium in Kutztown, Pa. Overall, Rowan claimed seven event titles, while Kutztown won seven as well. Rowan, however, had a much deeper squad to hold off some top-flight KU talent.

For Kutztown, Stephanie Jeppesen led her squad with three event titles in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM. Notably, her time of 2:26.96 in the 200 breaststroke broke the Keystone Natatorium record previously held by Rachel Cantwell of Albright College with a 2:27.73 set on Jan. 12 of this year.

Additionally, Ashley Singer tripled for KU with wins in the 100 free, 200 free and 500 free.

Rowan had a trio of its own as three swimmers each claimed a pair of titles. Caitlin Ayres won the 1000 free and 200 fly, while Steph McAllister swept the 100 and 200 back. Meanwhile, Janina Wojcik touched first in the 50 free and 100 fly.

200 medley relay
Kutztown took an early 11-6 lead when Nikki Cattell, Stephanie Jeppesen, Ashley Singer and Jill Pantelides clocked a 1:54.80 in the 200 medley relay for the win. Rowan took second and third with the quartet of Steph McAllister, Samantha King, Janina Wojcik and Christine DiRubbo posting the second-place time of 1:55.10.

1000 freestyle
Rowan countered with a 1-2 effort to take a 21-15 lead. Caitlin Ayres won the marathon event in 11:03.91, while teammate Carey Lafferty took second in 11:10.06. Kutztown's Staci McGinty rounded out the top three in 11:15.19.

200 freestyle
Kutztown responded in the 200 free with a 1-3 finish to retake the lead, 28-27. Ashley Singer got her hand to the wall first in 1:57.10, while teammate Nikki Cattell finished third in 2:05.27. Rowan's Aileen Milde split the difference in 2:03.20.

100 backstroke
Rowan made an emphatic statement in the 100 back with a top-three sweep to grab a 43-20 advantage. Steph McAllister won in 1:03.71, while teammates Alicia Mackleer (1:05.30) and Becky Goldberg (1:06.41) completed the top three. Nikki Cattell gave KU its best finish with a fourth-place 1:09.26.

100 breaststroke
Kutztown vaulted right back into the fray with a 1-2 performance to cut the gap to 48-44. Stephanie Jeppesen clocked a 1:08.76 for first, while teammate Heather Wolkom finished second in 1:09.56. Rowan's Meghan McCourt rounded out the podium in 1:10.74.

200 butterfly
Rowan absorbed the blow and fired right back to take a 63-47 advantage. Caitlin Ayres pocketed her second title with a 2:15.47, while teammate Ashley Gagnon took second in 2:19.19. Laura Heebner completed the top three for Kutztown in 2:23.99.

50 freestyle
Rowan poured it on in the splash-and-dash with a 1-2-3 finish. Janina Wojcik won in 25.67, while teammates Alicia Mackleer (25.86) and Christine DiRubbo (26.22) claimed second and third, respectively. Jill Pantelides gave KU its best finish with a fourth-place 26.32.

100 freestyle
Ashley Singer nabbed her second title with a time of 54.81 to help KU chip away at the lead, 88-60. Rowan's Alicia Mackleer (56.43) and Aileen Milde (56.78) placed second and third, respectively.

200 backstroke
Rowan eclipsed the century mark with a 103-64 lead when Steph McAllister won her second title of the meet in 2:16.26. Her teammate, Becky Goldberg, finished second in 2:20.40, while KU's Nikki Cattell took third in 2:20.66.

200 breaststroke
Kutztown's Stephanie Jeppesen provided the fastest race thus far with a time of 2:26.96 to win her second event title. Meanwhile, Rowan's Samantha King (2:33.37) and Meghan McCourt (2:34.30) finished second and third, respectively. At the end of the event, Rowan led 111-75.

500 freestyle
Ashley Singer stamped her name on the meet with a rare triple when she won the middle distance in 5:18.86. For Rowan, Carey Lafferty (5:27.39) and Ashley Gagnon (5:27.54) grabbed second and third, respectively. Rowan held a 120-85 advantage after the event.

100 butterfly
Rowan stepped out to a 134-90 lead with a 1-2 finish. Janina Wojcik came home with her second title in 1:02.66, while teammate Aileen Milde took second in 1:03.93. KU's Staci McGinty closed out the top three in 1:04.52.

200 IM
Stephanie Jeppesen joined Ashley Singer with her own title trifecta. Jeppesen won the 200 IM in 2:15.03, while Rowan's Samantha King (2:17.51) and Meghan McCourt (2:24.86) finished second and third, respectively. KU trailed 142-101 after the event.

200 freestyle relay
Rowan closed out the meet, 157-103, with a 1-2 finish in the 200 free relay. The quartet of Janina Wojcik, Aileen Milde, Christine DiRubbo and Alicia Mackleer touched in 1:42.71 for the win, while KU's quartet of Liz Rega, Kelsey Wiley, Lindsay Currie and Michele Ellis finished third in 1:47.08 for KU's best time.
