Virginia Teams Take Down Maryland in Final Dual

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia, February 3. THE Virginia swimming and diving teams concluded their regular seasons with victories over Maryland on Saturday afternoon at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The Cavalier men (8-2, 6-0 ACC) topped the Terrapins 124-115, while the Cavalier women (7-3, 5-1 ACC) defeated Maryland 132-92.

The Cavalier men won eight of the first nine events, before exhibitioning the final seven. Alex D'Ambrosio (Wayland, Mass) won both diving competitions, with a season-high scores of 291.53 in the one-meter and an exhibition score of 317.03 in the three-meter. Darren Ankosko (East Brunswick, N.J.) swam a season best 9:14.87 to win the 1000 free, and also had an exhibition win the 500 free with a time of 4:31.11. Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J.) had an NCAA `B cut' time in the 200 fly, winning in a season best time of 1:45.49. Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led a 1-4 Cavalier sweep in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.66, and won the 200 I.M. in an exhibition time of 1:50.51. In the 1000 backstroke, Bryan Stahl (Woodlands, Texas) won in a time of 50.66. PJ Sullivan (Franklin, Mass.) was the winner of the 100 breaststroke (57.82), and the 200 breaststroke (2:03.81). Geoff Parrish (Chesapeake, Va.) took first in the 50 free, with a time of 21.44. Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn.) won the 100 free in a time of 46.15. Kenton Harris (Lancaster, Ohio) scored an exhibition win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:51.74. Lee Robertson (Waynesboro, Va.) had an exhibition win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.53.

The women's team won nine of the first ten events, before exhibitioning the final six. Jackie Apple (New Albany, Ohio) won both diving competitions, with a score of 239.78 in the one-meter and a season-best 263.70 in the three-meter. Mei Christensen (Reston, Va.) took first in both the 100 backstroke (56.02) and 200 backstroke (exhibition time of 2:00.25). Katherine McDonnell (Culpeper, Va.) won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.26, and the 200 breaststroke in an exhibition time of 2:19.02. Jenn Narum (Pleasanton, Calif.) finished first in the 1000 free (10:12.46). Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C.) led a 1-4 Cavalier sweep in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.61. The winner of the 200 butterfly was Megan Evo (Beverly Hills, Mich.), with a time of 2:04.81. Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa.) was victorious in the 50 free with a time of 23.95. Rory Schmidt (Phoenix, Ariz.) took first in the 500 free in an exhibition time of 4:53.81. Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C.) was the winner of the 100 butterfly with an exhibition time of 56.52.
The Cavaliers also won the 200 medley relay as the team of Christensen, McDonnell, Glover, and Lewis swam a time of 1:43.62.

The Cavaliers will be off until the ACC Championship meet. The women's championship meet will be held February 14-17 at North Carolina, while the men's championship will be held February 21-24, also at North Carolina.
