Utah Clinches MWC Title

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, February 2. THE University of Utah women's swimming and diving team clinched the Mountain West Conference regular season championship on Friday night. The Ute women beat in-state rival BYU 157.5-142.5, in a dual meet that went down to the final event to decide the outcome. The Ute men lost to BYU 179-121.

With the women earned their fourth consecutive regular season crown, as they closed the season unbeaten at 10-0 overall and 8-0 in MWC competition. The meet with Cougars came down to the final event where the 400 free relay team of Alison McInturff, Amber Walter, Annie VanLeeuwen and Jennifer Fredsall won with a time of 3:26.27 to seal the title. Walter also won in the 100 breast (1:03.29), 50 free (23.42) and 100 free (51.10). McInturff added a second win in the 200 free (1:50.14). In the 200 IM Adrienne Coburn had to come from behind to tie for first with a time of 2:05.72, to set up for the final event. "This was the most exciting dual meet I've been a part of in my time coaching," comment Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "The girls were led by the seniors tonight and really stepped it up. This was the perfect way to send them out with an undefeated season and conference title and to close it with a win over our rivals was sweet for us. Hats off to BYU they did a great job and will be very tough at the conference championships."

The men fell short to the Cougars to finish off the regular season with a 5-6 overall record and 2-3 in the MWC. Marco Ferraro won the 200 free in a time of 1:41.66 and also the 500 free in 4:38.21. Michel DeCarolis came up with a win in the 100 breast (58.50) and 200 breast (2:07.45). "I'm proud of the guys," comments Litzinger. "BYU is a very good team and we competed well against them all night. This team never gave up and that has us ready to show what we can do at the conference championships in two weeks."

The Mountain West Conference Championships will be held February 21-24, in Oklahoma City, Okla. Both the men and women will compete in the Championships.
