Auburn Divers Sweep Awards on First Day of SEC Diving Competition

LEXINGTON, Kentucky, February 2. AUBURN'S men and women divers have pushed their teams ahead after day one of the 2007 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships.

Auburn's Steven Segerlin surged to the winner's circle after sticking a 74.40 on the sixth and final dive of the competition to overcome Florida's Jonathan Wilcox. Sergelin won the men's one-meter event with a score of 380.50. Wilcox took second with a 357.50 total score. Auburn's Kelly Marx placed third and Daniel Mazzaferro grabbed sixth to post a score of 61 as Auburn leaves with a 38 point edge over Florida.

"Definitely my last dive pushed me over the top," said Segerlin. "Coming from behind the whole meet to take the victory was real sweet and exciting.'

On the women's side, Auburn's Corey Gerlach edged Kentucky's Taryn Ignacio by two points to win the women's three-meter event. Gerlach scored an SEC-record 354.00 as Auburn took home its second win on the evening.

"I try to stay pretty relaxed during finals," said Gerlach. "If I put a lot of pressure on myself I don't dive as well."

Kentucky's Ignacio and junior Kari Retrum finished two and three, respectively with scores of 352.80 and 318.40 to pull Auburn is ahead of Kentucky 34-33 after day one.

The Championships resume tomorrow with the men's three-meter and women's one-meter diving events. On Sunday, the divers will compete in the platform event before swimming gets underway on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
