Poewe Charging Toward Third Olympics

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, February 2. TWO-time Olympian Sarah Poewe is currently training in Cape Town, South Africa in an attempt to make a run at an Olympic berth to the Beijing Games in 2008. Poewe is training under the watch of Karoly von Toros, the man who molded Poewe as a youth and has been charged with returning the 23-year-old to lofty heights on the international scene.

With von Toros since August, Poewe represented South Africa at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and competed for Germany at the 2004 Games in Athens. She will not participate in next month's World Championships for Germany after failing to qualify. Yet, she has remained with the sport and has focused her energy on qualifying for Beijing. She originally shifted allegiances to Germany due to her distaste for the training facilities in South Africa.

"My year didn't end on a good note because I failed to qualify for Melbourne, but I'm focusing on the next goal – which is the Olympics," Poewe said in the Cape Argus Newspaper. "I'm doing exceptional times in training with Karoly but I'll know for sure if it's working once I compete in a gala.

Poewe is scheduled to race at the German Nationals in April. Poewe has been a staple on the international scene for nearly a decade and her resume boasts several world-championship medals.
