English Teen Raising Money for Medical Equipment

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, England, January 31. BECKY Blackman, an English 15-year-old, is raising money for equipment that better detects the condition known as Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome. Blackman was diagnosed with the disorder after suffering from fainting spells, although it took time for doctors to figure out the problem.

One of the top-ranked backstrokers and sprint-freestylers in Nottinghamshire County, Blackman is raising money for a table that helps diagnose SADS. The disease causes, in addition to fainting, seizures and heart stoppage and studies indicate that 500 people can die each year from SADS. Blackman has been fitted with a small defibrillator and is now flourishing.

In order to raise money for the diagnostic equipment, Blackman and her family are sponsoring a swim on March 9 in Nottinghamshire. Swimmers taking part in the fundraising effort will try to cover 4,000 lengths of the pool, as a combined team, in less than two hours at the John Carroll Leisure Center.
