UNLV Teams Score Multiple Wins on Senior Day

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, January 28. THE UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams celebrated their Senior Day with a total of three victories on Saturday afternoon in Buchanan Natatorium. The Rebel men topped UC Santa Barbara 130-91, while the women's squad won a pair of dual meets, 121-120 over UCSB and 127-108 over Colorado State.

The Rebel men finish the regular season at 6-2 overall, and after this weekend's results, have clinched at least a share of their first-ever MWC regular season championship, thanks to Air Force losing a pair of road meets. UNLV is 4-1 overall in league play, and can do no worse then tie BYU (3-1 MWC) for the regular season title, with the Cougars still to swim at Utah next week. The UNLV women meanwhile improved to 5-4, and 4-3 in the MWC.

UNLV won the men's meet over UCSB thanks to winning 10 of the 12 events on the day. The Rebels had three double-event winners, Johan Claar (500 free in 4:32.06, 1000 free in 9:22.45). Brandon Nelms (50 free in 20.47, 100 free in 45.31), and Jonas Andersson (100 breast in 56.95, 200 breast in 2:05.21). Devin Phillips added a win in the 100 back (50.54), while Tamas Bosnyak claimed the 200 IM (1:53.64). UNLV also claimed wins in both the 200 medley (Adrian Law, Andersson, Tiger Christian, Nelms) and 200 free (Richard Hortness, John Byers, Nelms, Phillps) relays.

On the women's side, a pair of seniors shinned, as both Lani Seaman and Katie Wronn won a pair of events. Seaman claimed both distance events, the 500 free in 5:03.84 and the 1000 free in 10:14.05, while Katie Wronn took the sprint free events, swimming first place times of 23.68 in the 50 free and 52.05 in the 100 free. Single-event winners included Kim Bonney in the 100 breast (1:05.23) and Bailey Kuestermeyer in the 200 breast (2:17.37). The Rebel women were first as well in both the 200 medley (Amanda Weinbrecht, Bonney, Marina Sandback, Wronn) and the 400 free (Wronn, Sandback, Lauren Browning, Roxy Camuso) relays.

The Rebel women have one more meet left before the teams compete in the 2007 MWC Championships, as they host New Mexico on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2 pm in Buchanan Natatorium.
