Clemson Sweeps N.C. State

CLEMSON, South Carolina, January 27. CLEMSON left nothing to chance Saturday at McHugh Natatorium against rival N.C. State. Both the men's and women's 200 freestyle relays set the pool record as the Tigers cruised to victory. The Lady Tigers were led by Rachel Regone who claimed four event victories, and led Clemson to a 168-131 win. Clemson's women's team is now 9-5 (3-4 ACC) on the season. On the men's side, Mark Vahle also won four events, and the men won the meet 177-123. Clemson pulled themselves up to .500 in the ACC as they stand at 8-3 (3-3 ACC).

The Lady Tigers jumped out of the gate in the 200 medley relay as the team of Ashley Clay, Katrina Obas, Sarah Cefalu, and Rachel Regone won the event with a time of 1:46.41. Not far behind was the team of Michelle Parkhurst, Alexandra Barsanti, Jen Grove, and Lauren Sindall who came in at 1:46.62.

Summer O'Donnell kept the ball rolling as she won the 1650 freestyle (17:20.31) in the next event. Sophomore Cassy LaRussa (1:52.13) earned her only victory of the day in the 200 freestyle, and was followed by fellow sophomore Michelle Parkhurst (57.46) who was part of a 1-2-3 Clemson finish in the 100 backstroke. Ashley Clay (58.67) and Mary Paulsen (58.81) finished second and third in the event, repectively. Katrina Obas (1:04.92) teamed with Carmen Groenewoud (1:07.93) to take the top two spots in the 100 breaststroke. In the 200 butterfly, Sarah Cefalu (2:06.06) and Sarah Porri (2:06.63) also finished first and second. Regone picked up her second win of the day in the 50 freestyle (23.70) and her third win in the 100 freestyle (51.78). Lauren Sindall (53.09) finished second in the 100 free.

Ashley Clay placed first in the 200 backstroke (2:08.81) for Clemson. In the diving competition, Danielle Kazilionis (267.90) and Stephanie Fura (260.10) took the top two spots on the one-meter board. The Lady Tigers closed out the meet in grand fashion as the relay of Regone, Parkhurst, Sindall, and Kallie Deters set the pool record with a time of 1:34.30.

The men also finished first and second in the 200 medley relay to start the meet. The relay of Jay Crout, Andy Bergren, Adam Farnham, and Mark Vahle took first with a time of 1:32.08, while the team of Joel Johnson, Attila Ruszka, Stewe Fekete, and Brian Regone placed second. Brett MacLennan (1:41.40), Daniel Mengering (1:41.77) and Bryce Herrington (1:42.97) swept the top three places in the 200 freestyle. Attila Ruszka (57.65) and Andy Bergren (58.59) finished first and second in the 100 breaststroke. Clemson owned the sprint events as Vahle (20.48), Matt Balderston (21.38), and Stephen Russell (21.40) placed first, second, and third in the 50 freestyle.

In the 100 freestyle, Fekete (46.65), Regone (47.03) and Balderston (47.23) had a similar result as they also took first, second, and third. Vahle (50.66) and Farnham (50.94) teamed to place first and second for Clemson in the 100 butterfly. The 200 freestyle relay of Vahle, Farnham, Herrington, and Regone closed out the meet with another pool record as they finished in a time of 1:22.48.
